I have a HP Vectra VL600MT computer will 256 rimm memory, 15 gig hard drive, nic card, modem, monitor, CD, printer amd XP PRO. COMPUTER will not boot. Problem occured when loading childrens game that was for windows 98 or 95. Computer locked up during loading process.... turned off CPU..... thats when problem occured.

Scenerio..... pressed on button, computer tried to boot but hard drive clicked a couple of times, failed to continue to boot.... did not post BIOS, Keyboard did not light, 3 1/2 inch floppy did not light ..... computer on light is lit.

Checked out hardware...... replaced HD, powersupply, moved memory from slots (traded sides), checked all connections. In addition, tried to reload XP.... Did not work.

I'm not sure if it's HW (motherboard), Harddrive or SW.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks

Rick

Welcome to the Forums :) When you say "In addition, tried to reload XP.... Did not work," what precisely does happen? You can't try to reload XP if it won't even POST. Or am I getting .

Hi mechBgon:

Rick is a friend of mine that I was helping to solve his computer problem. Trying to reload XP was a last resort test after switching out the memory modules, PSU & HD. And yes, nothing happened when placing the XP cd-rom in the CD drive. When turning on the computer, the PSU fan turns on, HD spins and starts to load (clicks) and then stops clicking but continues to spin. As Rick stated, the keyboard and floppy drive won't light up. I couldn't figure out what was the problem.

Thanks

this is what i would do....

unplug everything, leaving only the psu, mobo, video card, and ram. see if it'll post. being u get power (the fans spin), i dont think its a psu issue. if it still dont post, perhaps try a dif video card... then mem. if is still fails, then i would assume mobo failure. also, make sure there isn't any loose screws flopping around in the case.

short out/reset your CMOS and then try bare minimum configuration...see if that works...

there may be a jumper on your MOBO or a setting in your BIOS to reset the CMOS or you could just take the battery out for a little while...
