Computer will not detect the USB mouse.

Hi there, I'm hoping one of you can help me out.

I'm trying to install a Logitech Optical Mouse on an older system that has no ps/2 or USB ports, all it has is a serial port =[

Now, I bought a Belkin USB PCI controller card to add 2 USB ports to the computer. Everything with that seems to install fine, both USB devices are installed (The Universal USB Host Controller and the USB Root Hub).

Now, I unplug the serial mouse and plug in the USB mouse and boot up windows (win98 NOT se). Windows does not find the USB mouse - instead, it gives me a little yellow exclamation point next to the USB Root Hub device in the Device Manager. The error is that "an error has occured causing the hub port to be disabled - check the device cables etc"

Its an older motherboard..obviously (but i'm not sure what make it is..) with a Pentium 1 chip 32mb ram yadda yadda.

Any suggestions of how to get this thing to work ?

EDIT: Umm...will this Belkin USB PCI controller card ONLY work with win98se and later? Meaning...it won't work properly with win98? Could someone confirm/deny that plz ?

First thing to check is to see if USB is supported in the bios. If not, you could have some problems. I know it's not built-in....but...it could be possible
that windows isn't detecting it properly due to the fact that it isn't enabled in the bios. Just look around and see if there is a setting to enable USB
support. That may not be of much help but it's the first thing I would do. I had trouble with a USB mouse once.....and it turned out that it was my fault
because the USB support was turned off in the bios. Good luck with it! I'm sure you'll get it figured out! 🙂

when u get that error, is there an option to click the button to enable the device again? if not, i would try to remove the device from the device manager, then shut down and try to reseat the pci card. i am not sure about the bios solution, but hey, what have u got to lose? and i don't think that the card would only work with win98se and not win98...but i could be wrong.

Does the yellow exclamation mark go away if you boot
without the mouse plugged in?
Did the mouse come with software?
IF yes,
has it been installed?

Yes, the exclamation point goes away when i unplug the USB mouse and reboot.

The mouse does come with software, and I have tried installing it, but it doesn't seem to help.
