My computer wouldnt boot for quite a few tries. I was checking my mail when all of a sudden, it turns off and powers back up, but would not boot. the beep kept going for a long time and the monitor remained black. i restart the computer again and the same thing happens. so i shut it down and try to start it again. this time everything powers up: dvd and cdrw, video card running, cpu fan running, i can feel the harddrive spinning, but no beep and the harddrive light stays on; computer doesnt boot up. no video what so ever. kept restarting and still nothing

so i turn it off and let it sit for a minute, try it again and it boots- except no beep and it said i had to load default CMOS settings. did so and everything has been normal so far, except there is no longer a beep when i start the computer. i even restarted the comp to test it- boots up fine, just no beep.

i also noticed that the time has been reset to january 1st 2002.

can anyone explain to me what happened and how do i prevent it from happening again? its approaching finals and i cannot afford to have this happen again. please help

thanks in advanced

Just take the battery to walmart and look where they sell batteries. Its just a standard battery and they will have one to replace it for $3.

There may be somethign else wrong with your computer too. Try reseating the video card and ram. Run memtest86 on the memory. What power supply are you using?

PSU is an Antec 380W. the entire set up is only about 6months old.

i'll try to reseat the vid card and ram right now.

my friend said that the battery is rechargeable and that every restart will recharge it. i havent shut down the comp for almost two weeks, but i dont think that should affect it... also doesnt explain why it no longer beeps.

thanks for your help!
