Computer upgrade ?

Thinking about upgrading my Q6600 machine. I mainly do photo/video editing. Main progrmas I use is PS CS5 and Nikon Capture NX 2 for photography and Videostudio X2 and various other video software (Handbrake, ANYDVD, etc). Was thinking aobut Intel (Core i7-875K) but they seem to change socket types all of the time. So I'm also thinking about AMD (Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition). Hate to be buying a new MB everytime I want to upgrade. Is this a valid argument for AMD or is Intel far ahead of AMD and I should just get Intel and not worry about what will happen in 2-4 years?

If you are already feeling the limitations of a Q6600 as opposed to just 'wanting' to upgrade then, go with the i7 as you are unlikely to be able to avoid a MB update regardless of which platform you choose.

If you haven't, overclock that Q6600. You might as well. Even if it dies (which would be highly, highly unlikely) you'd need to change anyway, and OC'ing would give you probably 50% more performance right off the bat with minimal cost.

Yea try to overclock what you have now and wait for either the AM3+ boards for AMD or intels sandy bridge.

Part of the reason for wanting an upgrade is that I want a MB with firewire on board. It seems like the MB that I got in haste since my last one died, I forgot to see if it had firewire. I got a PCI card for firewire for my camcorder but it won't work properly with the camcorder. I can't load my videos from the camcorder. I've got to take the camcorder to work, load it from there and then bring the video back home. It's a pain. It's the second firewire card that I got and neither work well with the camcorder. Processing power is not really an issue at this time but if I'm going to get a new MB and reload all of my programs, I might as well get a new processor too. Maybe I'll just wait a few months and not take as much videos.

So do you think AMD will also change platforms?

Yes the newwer CPUs, bulldozer at least, will require a AM3+ board. They tried to make it work on AM3 but would have to lose certain functions to do so. Now AMD has said that as of now AM3 chips will work in a AM3+ socket but AM3+ CPUs will not work in a AM3 board. So if you bought a AM3 board, best there is now, it will not work with the bulldozer CPUs next year.

Same as Intel, Sandy Bridge will require a new board.


I have a 775 board like you and am waiting to see what comes out next year.

Good luck with that. Firewire is a dying standard so you might have a hard time finding boards with it, new or otherwise.

I like Gigabyte boards and it seems like a lot of them have firewire. I wonder if the newer camcorders use firewire.

Just get an adapter. My MSI eclipse has Firewire, but it's not a common feature anymore, and if I were you I wouldn't restrict my choices just for it.

In time, sooner rather than later. New features on new processor models will demand it.

Which makes buying the highest model available on the current platform not the most logical move if you think your next upgrade will be a processor for the same motherboard.

As far as having to buy a new mobo when upgrading the CPU... this is just how things are... mobo + ram + CPU, they go together. don't fight it
