Hi,

I have a old AMD 1.2 GHZ system I need to replace with a new system. ASUS (k7V) 8 years old

Sould I go with Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD AM2 system.

Is Core 2 Duo much faster or better then AM2.

what system would I be better off with Intel or AMD.
Cost of CPU's is a major issue for me looking for 2+ GHZ system (2.4,2.5 or 2.66) to start with.

Have limited funds to work with.

Get a few parts at a time as I have money. CPU and MB 1st
then memory , video card, power, then case (might reuse)

when have more $$ will just get faster CPU latter & take out old one.

Have a AM2 4800+ 65w 2.5 GHZ was thinking of sending back?

what sould I do? what is better system.

why I am looking: below

Old computer is dieing need to replace it. (HD is dieing) and to slow for xp

Have DVD burner as well but CPU is under min req is 1.2 (CPU min req is 1.6 )
get many data veracation errors.

But I am out of work so cost is an issue but would like high quality system for gaming and Work. (Note want to run vista as well on system latter) dual boot XP and vista

I will be using computer mainly for games and work (office2003 or 2007)

But have a few high-end things in mind DVD-burner,HD-DVD,Blueray,TV (cablecard) and vista and use windows media center as well for DVR,PVR,virtualization and file server as well.
Thouse are the main things so the more power I can get the better.

question what are the min reqirements for the Hight def stuff above. -HD-DVD,Blueray
2 GHZ or more.

I think the Core 2 stuff is faster but right now is not cheap.

Need help am very confused what to do

This is a tough question to answer and really depend on how much money you have to spend, what you use your computer for, and if you are willing to over-clock.

The E4300 Core 2 Duo is an excellent choice for gamers who are willing to over-clock their rigs. It costs just $169 on Newegg.com right now so is priced very nicely.

In the benchmarksI have seen at firingsquad.com it was very close to the Athlon 63 X2 4600+ while clocked normally and actuall beat the Core 2 Extreme X6800 when over-clocked.

The 4600+ is 123.99 at Newegg.com, but I don't believe it can over-clock the way the E4300 can.

I don't like to over-clock and use my 'puter for more than games so I am actually targeting the E6600 processor. The total cost of my rig with the 8800GTS (640mb) is coming in just over $1100.

Isn't Intel about to drastically drop their prices on the current chips?

So is AMD. Both have good upgrade paths I believe. AM2 should take Barcelona and I don't think Intel is changing platforms soon, but I haven't been following Intel too closely.

Hi,
Guys(darin) here I will be using computer mainly for games and work (office2003 or 2007)

But have a few high-end things in mind DVD-burner,HD-DVD,Blueray,TV (cablecard) and vista and use windows media center as well for DVR,PVR,virtualization and file server as well.

2 GHZ or more.

Below is what i got so far note is was looking for 65nm part not older 90nm CPU
I did not see any of the higher AMD CPUS in 65NM parts. Do they have a 2.8 or 3.0 GHZ
65 NM part yet that use lower power as well 65 watt is what I got.

I figure the less power it uses the cooler it will run as well? (right or wrong)

CPU AMD|A64 X2 4800+ 2.5G AM2 65N R - Retail
Item #: N82E16819103778 $189.0

ASUS CROSSHAIR AM2 nForce 590 - Retail $234.99

500G|ST 7K 16M SATA2 ST3500630AS - OEM $145.00

so far $600.0

note still need memory, case, video card ,power supply. Need help with good memory DDR-800 that can be over clooked well

I just want to get the best computer I can get I will have to buy parts in stages as I have money a little bit at a time then put it all together.

Not sure what buget is will just get parts i need but figure it will be around $ 1500 max

will over clock a little bit or some. Not great at it hope I can get 3 GHZ out of 2.5 GHZ
cpu what you think possable

Would love to get a Intel but think they might be to much $$$ right now would love a Core 2 Quad but lot of $$ (feel kind of funny about Intel allways been an AMD guy)
Hope AMD Barcelona will work with AM2 might just need BIOUS update I hope.

but will cheek out the prices for the parts you talked about below. what speed where they?

please feel free to post any ideas or feelings about this.

note:
BucNews --one thing has me a little conserned about E4300 Allendale? core
Another feature that?s been removed from the Core 2 Duo E4300 is virtualization.

Thanks,

Darin

Well... based upon the above I set out to see what kind of box I could put together for you thats > $1500.
Here's my recommendation, others feel free to critique.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz - $218.00
ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI - $124.99
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB DDR2 - $200.00
EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS - $369.99
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3500630AS 500GB - $145.00
NEC 18X DVD±R DVD Burner - $30.99
Silverstone SST-ST60F ATX 600W Power Supply - 119.99
Silverstone Temjin SST-TJ02SW Silver Aluminum Case - $99.99
Tuniq Tower 120 P4 & K8 CPU Cooler - $64.99

Total = $1,373.94
Plus you can save an extra $80 with MIR making the total just under $1300.
This system gives you a good Intel Core 2 chip and a great HSF to overclock it with. A 8800GTS can handle any game out there and any game for at least the next year. Plus the SLI board gives you the option to add another and the 600 watt PSU the power to push it. I have the Temjin case myself and love it. Didn't include a TV tuner because I don't know much about them but I'm sure you can get a good one for under $200.
