i just built a computer, its been like 15 years since my last build which is ridiculous i know. i got everything together and when i turn it on it powers up the fans all seem to power up and the lights come on but nothing shows on the screen and when i go to power it down with the power button it does nothing, i've held it forever and it doesnt turn off so i had to turn it off with the power supply unit. im at a loss with what to do next, and of course frustrated so any help would be much appreciated. i've been going through all the wires one by one and making sure they have a good connection but so far it hasnt helped. thanks a lot.

i called asus and they told me to look at my CPU to see if any of the prongs were bent and i just did and they werent, the CPU LED light on the board was orange and they said it sounded like it was in standby so they suspect something with the ram or the cpu. i need to get some rubbing alcohol to clean up the cpu and heatsink before i reattach it so its gonna be a bit before i do anything else or call them back.

i dont now what you mean by grounded to the motherboard. the back of the EVO fan/heatsink the backplate touches the metal on the back of the case, not the case itself but the motherboard tray but i asked the asus guy and he said that shouldnt be a problem that it should just send more heat to the case itself. i really dont know much about computer language anymore, i used to know a lot like 10 years ago so very basic stuff remains.

I would pretty much pull everything off the board... install 1 RAM stick, the SSD, and obviously, the CPU. Maybe even start with the stock cooler (in lieu of the 212.) Power it up and see if it posts. Then add things one at a time... either it will fully boot or it won't... that way you can help identify what might be wrong. If it doesn't boot with 1 RAM stick, swap to the other stick and/or use a different RAM slot.

well the good news is i got it so the power button will turn it on and off, the bad news is that it still wont show anything on the display, i'm gonna call asus again and see if they have any ideas and relay my progress to them, might have to get a new motherboard from them or something. also i swapped in the stock fan and heatsink and did all the stuff you mentioned and still no luck so far, i might be forgetting something really basic that i just dont know about, i'll have to read the manual and stuff to find out what that might be. if you have any other ideas they're more than welcome, and thanks a lot for your suggestions so far.

Simplify. Disconnect everything except:

Power Supply
Motherboard
CPU + fan
RAM (minimum required)
video card

No mouse, no keyboard, no HDD, no bells, just whistles. Remember no need to remove the components from the case, just disconnect the power and data cables.

And I have to ask, but I assume your monitor is selecting the right source? If not force it. Your video card also has several outputs. I take it it's smart enough to detect and output to whatever is connected. If not, find out which is the default. Also I'm not sure, but it seems as if newer computers no longer do the BIOS beep on boot up.

It's probably the CPU (well, the board really). Manufacturers are notorious for shipping boards with the first release BIOS, leaving it up to the consumer to do the update.

According to the Asus page, your chip needs BIOS 1006 or later to work properly.

Maybe you can find a local repair shop that will do this update for you.

i did what you said the bare minimum, i get a single beep from the mobo speaker but no display. i also looked in the book for the videocard and it doesnt seem to say if there is a primary display it just says hook it to one of the ones in there i currently have it in the hdmi and i checked the cords they're plugged in just in case that was it. i tried contacting asus through their chat support and they ditched me! hah i guess i better call them, i was gonna earlier but i had other stuff to do.

Are you talking the HDMI out on the mobo... not the video card?

Good for you, OP, glad you sorted it out.

Also, KUDOS for coming back to tell us about it. Too many people ask questions and start discussions, only to disappear afterwards, and we never hear what the solution was!

I had an issue similar to this recently - with a different solution. It turned-out that the extra power supply connections to my video card weren't properly attached.

I plugged those things in better and everything worked.

LOL same mistake when I built my last computer. Plugged in a GTX 570. Booted up no display was like, "WTF!" Went through all the checks, messed around with RAM, made sure things were in tight. After about a half an hour I opened it back up and then spotted it. Realized I went full DERP and forgot to plug in the two six pin connectors.

Of course the GTX 570 they were on the flipping side of the card instead of the top. Dunno why EVGA went full derp on that (maybe all the manufacturer's did). Was glad when I got my 770 they were on top.
