Computer Troubles

Last night, we had a power surge. I started the computer back up and got back on HL2 DM. Everything was working fine. My Virtual Drives were still present as I was using them last night as well.

However, when I started my computer this morning, my keyboard and my mouse did not turn on. I checked all of the cables and found nothing wrong. So I restarted my computer. Sure enough, my keyboard came on... but my mouse did not.

Well, with my keyboard working, I could navigate around my computer and try to troubleshoot the mouse. When I un-plugged it and plugged it back in, a message popped up about the computer not recognizing the USB device. After that, I un-installed and re-installed the mouse to see what was going on. Once it was done, another message popped up about the optical mouse malfunctioning. It suggested I Click that message pop-up to fix the problem.

Now, seeing as how I am unable to navigate certain websites without a mouse, I was unable to visit the Logitech website to see if there was some sort of FAQ I could check. If anyone knows a way to fix this without using a mouse, please let me know. I really need a mouse today so I can transfer my homework from my computer to my thumb drive.

The mouse is a Logitech, 8 button MX510.

**Sorry that this is slovenly written, trying to get it posted before I head to town to search for a temporary replacement**

That is copied from my Peripherals board, but since my Virtual Drive is missing, I assume that someone here may be able to help me as well. Also, after searching through my computer more thoroughly, I have found that some of my files are missing. My homework folder is gone, some game icons are missing, certain pictures are gone... I don't know what the hell is going on with this.

As a temporary workaround, you can use the Tab key to change the "focus" to what button you want to click on a panel, then use the Enter key to perform the click. If the new mouse doesn't work either, your motherboard may have been damaged 🙁 You could try a PS/2 adapter to see if your PS/2 (round green) mouse port is working.

Using Tab is the only way I am getting around on my computer. I did forget about the PS/2 adapter that came with my mouse. I shall go dig it out and try it.

Thanks for that. If it works, you just saved me an hour trip into town and $40.

It worked. I guess my USB ports are fried since I tried to use various other USB devices and they seemed to be "malfunctioning". Ugh! I guess I need a new mobo now...

Now what about my Virtual Drives disappearing? Better yet, how do I get it back?

Also, how could this have happened overnight when the computer wasn't even on? I don't see how lightning or rain can fry a USB port when there is no power supplied to it. This is considering that my mouse and Virtual drives were working fine last night, but are gone this morning.

If USB is all thats wrong, get a pci usb card and be done with it.
