Computer takes 10 minutes to boot up?

So I restarted my computer today and it took about 10 minutes to get to the "windows loading" screen. I restarted again and the same problem persisted.

I ran Norton Antivirus and it found two viruses (or bugs? can't remember) that I removed. This didn't fix the problem. So then I ran an update for adaware and ran it, it removed quite a few bugs. Then I ran a live update for Norton and did a full system scan again and it didn't find any viruses.

Anyway, the problem is not fixed. I had also tried system restore to a point before this started happening (when I knew that a system boot up was normal).

I know one of the other members of my family uses this computer for downloading, however, I dont know if he downloaded a virus/bug today by accident.

Anyway, the only ways I know to fix this problem are running virus scan, system restore, and formatting...please don't let me get to the last one.

Help

Download HiJackThis(Look for it on Google) and it'll give you a log. That's what we need.

Also, some viruses, if not most, infect the restore points making them useless.

also, run ad-aware in "full" scan instead of the "smart" scan, this can take off more spyware.

I uninstalled Norton Antivirus and Installed McAfee virusscan and it found a trojan and some more spyware but removing these things did not help my cause.

Again, my problem is that the system just hangs right before the "loading windows" message pops up. All it shows for 10 minutes is a black screen and in the top left corner it has a blinking _

Please Help

THANKS

Hehe, I just have a little FYI. Norton Antivirus is not as effective as it was years ago. I've read many reviews not in its favor. (also user reviews)

PCWorld review for example
ZDnet Review

Besides being a system resource hog, it does not offer free technical support. (~30 bucks per incident call compared to PC-cillin's free technical support)

In addition, some of the FREE antivirus software compete competitively with Norton.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, back to the topic! Try to use Trend Micro HouseCall, Panda Software ActiveScan, BitDefender Free Virus Scan.

If it is truely a virus problem. Something should show up.

If this does not solve your problem, load your windows disk and use the repair feature.

Ok well I ran mcafee...isn't that a good enough virusscan or should I still be running these programs as well?

Also, is it really a windows problem or is it something wrong with the boot disk?

Whenever I use the repair function on windows, it just reinstalls windows and changes all my settings, I dont understand it.

THANKS

its prob a virus situation, but also look into "Microsoft Bootvis" when you are done..its optimizes the windows startup times

Since it is stalling out before even getting to the Loading Windows screen, I would suspect something hardware-wise or some setting in the bios.

I would open up the case and ensure that all cables were seated correctly...IDE cables to hard drive and CDROMs/DVD players, floppy drive if you have one. Check the cables on the motherboard side, too; not just at the drive end. Just reseat them all on both ends of the cables.

Reseat your Ram sticks, too. Blow out any dust in there while you're there.

Also, disconnect any external USB devices and try booting as an experiment. See if the boot time is normal.

Can we dispel this myth about Bootvis once and for all? From Microsoft:

Please note that Bootvis.exe is not a tool that will improve boot/resume performance for end users. Contrary to some published reports, Bootvis.exe cannot reduce or alter a system's boot or resume performance. The boot optimization routines invoked by Bootvis.exe are built into Windows XP. These routines run automatically at pre-determined times as part of the normal operation of the operating system.

Ok the problem was the USB cord from my printer. I had just purchased and installed this printer 1 day before the problem started to occur. However, I had restarted the computer before this with no problems. Whenever I dont have the USB cord in, windows starts fast, like it used to. However, when I do, I get the same problem.

I tried uninstalling the printer and the drivers and reinstalling and the same problem occured. There are no newer drivers for this printer (latest one as late 2005 dated, when the machine was manufactured) so I dont know what to do?

THANKS

Can you still print on your computer? Have you tried a different cable? (probebly won't help) You have two choices. Plug in your printer only when you need it, or get a new printer.
You can report your problem to the manufacturer and they may be able to help, but don't get your hopes up.

Once again, Slik nails the problem! I see this is a Brother printer from your hijackthis log. You might try disabling it's running applications using hijackthis:

D:\WINDOWS\system32\brsvc01a.exe (process)

Kill (uncheck):

O23 - Service: BrSplService (Brother XP spl Service) - brother Industries Ltd - D:\WINDOWS\system32\brsvc01a.exe

Also, go to START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS>SERVICES and find the "Brother XP spl" service and set it to DISABLED. You probably don't even need this service for the printer to work. Looks like it's trying to by-pass the Windows print spooler for it's own. Let us know if you have trouble printing after disabling this service.

BTW - Your hijackthis log looks pretty good.

Well I used to have a brother printer until i got this new Epson printer. I thought I uninstalled all of the brother components but apparantely not. I used hijackthis to disable the brsvc01a.exe and stop it from starting up with windows but this didn't solve the problem.

I'm still able to hook the usb cord into the slot and print after starting windows with no problem but if i leave it in there and restart then it wont start for 10 minutes.

I dont know how to remedy this problem and I would like to leave the USB cord hooked in all the time instead of having to remove it and hook it back in.

THANKS

What's the exact make/model of your pc? Do you know what motherboard is in it?

Download the free "Everest" application. It will tell you all kinds of stuff about your pc.
It's no longer available from the creators, but MajorGeeks still has it for download.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Choose the "Florida" download site out of the list for a quick download.

Run the application, then go through the different sections (don't have it open in front of me), and find the info about your motherboard. Everest uses icons like control panel does for the various sections, so it's pretty easy to use.

Report back.

Just an aside question, have you installed all the XP updates to the system? Have you ever installed the mobo chipset drivers?

I will download the everest and tell you waht it comes up with.

I have automatic updating on and everything from windows xp is updated. My computer is a DELL model so the only chipset drivers are from them. I did not update them (I thought windows does it automatically) using the DELL cd they gave with the computer (comp is about 3 years old).

Still need the exact model of the Dell, in addition to what Everest tells you about the motherboard.

I flashed the BIOS with a newer version and it fixed the problem!

Thanks, I wouldn't have though of that without the information that the problem may be hardware related rather than software. Apparently the old DELL bios didn't recognize these new USB devices.

THANKS

I went to the Dell Dimension 4600 support page. There is a bios update dated 09/27/2004, and it does address a couple of USB issues. Whether it will absolutely help your issue is not known, but if your bios is earlier than this, I would definitely "flash" it to this upgraded version.

First, go back to Everest. Click on the Motherboard icon, or the Motherboard entry on the left. Both go to the same place.

Now, click on Bios.

Look at the Bios Properties section. Copy/paste what you see there back here. What you're specifically looking for is the System Bios Date. If it's earlier than 09/27/2004, then your bios could use an update.

Here's the Dell page specifically for your bios update. Has instructions (step by step) on how to do it.
