Computer suddenly won't boot no more. What can be wrong?

Hi,

Suddenly my (old) computer won't boot no more. When I power it on I hear a long beep and that's it (even the monitor, keyboard and mouse don't get any signals from the moterboard). I thought it might be the cpu that suddenly died, but I don't think so: When I switch the computer on without a cpu cooler and hold my finger on the cpu, it get's very hot in notime. The long beep is not listed in the Award Bios beep error codes, so that is not getting me anywhere either.

Motherboard: ASUS CUSL2
Processor: Intel Pentium III 800Mhz
Memory: 512Mb 133Mhz: 1 x 256Mb, 2 x 128Mb.

Please help! I just bought a new computer, but still need the old one...

My mobo, an abit not a asus, uses award bios. So maybe they're similar.

If so, there are two long beeps. One is for ram and the other (like a two tone siren) is for cpu overheat.

So, I'd play around with the ram (try each stick individually, use diff slots etc), maybe double check to see if my HS was too dirty or the fan dying.

Yeah I'd play around with the RAM too... try all the configurations you can think of.
I'd just start by pulling out 1 at a time, and going from there.

You might check your video card to make sure it is plugged into the AGP slot fully.

Also check the FAN on your CPU Heatsink. My MB (Soyo SY-K7V Dragon) will not let the computer boot if the CPU fan is below a certain RPM.

Thank you for your replies so far! I figure that it has to be a defective mobo. I have done everything to make sure that there is only just one component that is the bottleneck (even tried different cpu's etc.). The only thing I did not try jet is the power supply and cpu fan.

What if I have to replace the mobo (Socket 370 FPGA). What is a good replacement?

I see that you haven't been able to test w/another psu. So I posted the psu beep for award/abit mobo's.

You don't wanna throw away a good s370 mobo lol. I've been looking for one for a while, hard to find the right one. But you can check dumpinggoods.com, every one in a while, they got some for cheap.

My beep is just one long beep (duration ~2 sec.). After that beep nothing happens. No keyboard, no screen, disks are starting up but nothing more then that, etc. It looks like this isn't even a bios beep. So maybey it is the psu. I'll try another psu this evening and other fan and I'll let you know what the results are.
Do you agree that when it is not the psu, fan, disks, pci cards, memory, video, floppy, keyboard, mouse (hell, I did test everything...) that it has to be the mobo? Maybey I can get a new (old) S370 mobo from my work...

Ok, now I really checked everything. Even the things of wich it's obvious that it can't be the bottleneck, like a defective disk. I don't have any more idea's that might bring me to another defective component then my mobo. So, mobo it is. My last check will be replacing the mobo with a temp mobo. If it works, it has to be the mobo and I will replace it then. And that is not a thing I was waiting for! Just bought a new computer...

If someone still has an idea of what might be defective, other then the mobo, please reply to this topic!
