Computer stutters occasionally

so no matter what I'm doing - music, games, photoshop, recording, whatever - my computer occasionally, like maybe once every five to ten minutes, stutters.

so when I'm listening to music:

"Blank face in the windowPPPPPPPPPPPPPpane... made clear in seconds of light"

and when I'm playing games:

*pew pew pew* *kaboom* *pew PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPpew pew*

when it happens it sounds like a robot because it's stuttering really fast. and at the same time, CPU usage spikes to 100%. the stutter makes the computer hang for about half a second or so. I can't listen to music on this computer, because the stutter is really annoying. I can't get any recording done either.

I run Windows 7 64-bit, whatever came with my Asus. the laptop is an Asus UL30VT-A1. the specs are:

doesn't matter if it's running on battery, it still stutters.

any helps would be greatly appreciated!

Try watching the Process list in Task Manager. Sort by CPU time. See if you can tell what process is using 100% of the processor time when it stutters like that.

If I interpreted your symptoms correctly, it's possible that your PSU is dying. I had my computer stutter and freeze up for a few seconds with fans revving up for a couple of weeks before the PSU finally gave up. I suspect the 5V rail couldn't cut it in the long run.

Oh lord, didn't see it was a laptop. Nvm my post :D

stuttering is mostly a hdd issue. and the laptop has a 5400 rpm drive = ultra slow.

That's the reasonfor the ssd hype at least here on anandtech. but even with a 7200 rpm drive i would will an improvment.

I suggest to clean up your windows. Eg. remove all bloatware that came with it. (always a pain with laptops).
Do other typical windows tweaks like removing useless apps froms autostart, etc.
might help too.

this is actually my second Asus UL30VT-A1. the hard drive in the first one I got died, so I got a replacement from J&R. what are the chances of having two dead drives in a row? :(

edit: also, the stutter in the first laptop and this one are different. the first one I knew the hard drive was dying, but this one I know it's not with the hard drive. I'll backup whatever I can though.

i think i noticed something. when the computer is idle, it doesn't stutter. (windows task manager shows a flat CPU usage graph). it has to produce sound. hmm.

Not to hijack the thread but, the symtom you are describing while playing games occurred here too. I was playing Counter-Strike 1.6. After it happened a few times I heard the Windows USB detecting/removing sound. So I disconnected all USB products exept my mouse and continued playing, it seemed to work.
But that evening I was watching tv and the same thing happened with the TV. Now I know we have an all in one deal at our provider (telephone, internet and TV) and maybe that has to do something with eachother, something like a bad connection, I think internet and telephone run thru the same cables. It's very weird, could be a coincidence though.
