That about says it all. When I use a file sharing program (doesn't seem to matter which one) my computer will freeze every few seconds. I have also turned on the task manager and noticed that the CPU is usually tied up 100% when this occurs. It would seem that the mouse would still work though. After about 3 seconds of being "frozen" it comes back to life. It will never actually lock up to the point of needing a reboot but it is rather annoying. Maybe it's time for a new CPU?

Specs.

Abit Bh6
Celeron 566@850
Win2K
Intellimouse w/ intellieye (tried PS2 and USB)
Voodoo3 3500TV
Had MX300 switched to old SB because of sound stuttering on RTCW.
Linksys NIC.

Any ideas?

This only seems to occur when using file sharing apps....so far Morpheus Bearshare and Kazaa all do it.
Thanks in advance

Have you tried the latest kazaa lite which is unencumbered by spyware? Have you run ad aware?

The processor speed is plenty because mine is even slower, yet I'm not experiencing what you've described. If you can't pinpoint what is taking up so much processor time, use something like wintop.

Cool....I uninstalled Bearshare Kazaa and Morpheus ran ad-aware and it had appox. 1 million spyware progs in the background. I downloaded Kazaa lite and it seems to be working. I have still noticed a few hitches but nothing like it was doing. For instance I typed this whole message without the computer freezing which would not have happened before. Thanks for the help.

If you had that much spyware, then maybe you also have some of those annoying programs running that some programs furtively install, like bonzai buddy, gator, etc.

With wintop you can see all programs running and if you can't track down what each one of them does, then find a way to stop 'em from running. For instance, mine shows 23 things running, while ctl-alt-del only shows 12. Bloatware like realplayer will slow you down and most of these programs are things that needn't be running unless you specifically open them.

Good luck.
