Computer stops at bootup ?

Have a slight problem here. When I reboot the computer at my job it gets to Windows 98 screen just before desktop and just seems to stop. After about 5-7 minutes I get impatient and push the power off/on. It boots up then and I get the choice of Safe Mode etc. I pick Normal and it boots fine. It is a dog for a computer. 300 Celeron I think w/ 128MB SD RAM. It's hard drive is nearly clear full and the computer is also used as a server. So when I am in the back working away and it freezes I end up with 4 people in there asking me what is going on. Any ideas? I hate to power it off like that everytime I reboot. It may even boot but take 15 minutes. Let me know what you all think the problem is a a possible cure would also be nice. Thanks in advance.

PS. Believe me I know a great cure. NEW COMPUTER. But I am new and have not tried that on the boss yet so I would like to just get this one managebale.

There is a MSKB concerning your issue that may be applicable Computer hangs after windows logo displayed at start-up Let me know how your getting on.

OK I am getting into Windows finally. By once it hangs. I power it off then back on. It comes up automatically to startup options. 1. Normal 2. SafeMode....etc...I pick normal and it boots up.

I'm not really sure but it could be your Hdd is to full. Was it always like this even when HDD not full?

I just started so I am not sure if it was OK before the hard drive got so full. I do find it odd that powering it off then back on makes it boot up OK. The boss mentioned "it is going through the cache when it is just sitting there." But I waited 7 minutes and it never moved. I cant just sit for 10-15 minutes while it boots up. Thanks all.

Just had to reboot again. Sat for 10-15 minutes at Windows screen. Nothing. Help please.

Well since the MSKB didn't help, have you tried a scan disk and defrag? what about running Norton disk doctor, ect? If that doesn't help try an overlay reinstall of windows 98, that way your settings won't change. Another suggetion would be to buy a larger HDD and ghost the present one to it or back up what you need and start fresh with the new drive. Another stick of ram wouldn't hurt if your boss can afford it and if possible you should strip it down to barebones to see if it's a hardware issue. Obviously this is generic advice but the best I can do given so little data to work off of
