Computer startup and restart problem! NEED HELP! VERY TOUGH QUESTION! PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hello my name is Spencer and I have a very serious problem that
involves the start up and restart of my PC. Here's the problem!

When I first boot up or If I do a restart: For some reason only when I
start up for the first time or restart my computer, it skips the
"memory check/test". Then when I try to move my mouse (while the
computer is still starting up) the movement of the mouse sounds the
pc's internal speaker, making a (very annoying- making you want to
through it out the window) sound every time. If that does not sound
weird, my keyboard does not respond either. As you can guess-these
problems (not only being very time consuming and annoying) causes me to
reset every time!!!!!!! 🙁 BUT GET THIS- VERY STANGE - !!!!! After I
reset the computer, this time it performs a "memory check/test" and the
computer works fine. No sounds are made when I move the mouse and the
keyboard works.

Break down of the problem:

Initial start up or re-start: No "memory test/check" at start up =
sounds made when mouse moves (while still starting up) and no response
from the keyboard.

After I reset-

Memory "test/check" is performed, there are no sounds made when I move
the mouse and the keyboard works.

Go figure!

I have had this problem for more than a 2 months. I am a very self
Suffincant computer technician when it comes to troubleshooting and I
have had no luck in determining what causes this very time consuming
operation of starting up and restarting.

I hope you can help, I am in dire need!

Thanks for you time and effort,

1)I would check to see if every device on your computer is plugged in tightly.
Do not assume it to be all plugged in correctly. If necessary disconnect everything and re-insert ...just make sure they are all firmly in the correct slot or plug.

2) If you have a friend that has almost the same system setup.....see if he is wiling to test some of the components for you.....that is...exchange his ram with yours see if this happens....and do that for the ram...mb cpu..

3) if that doesnot help...try flashing your system bios to the latest...i wolud make this my last resort...but it would definiately help...but becareful about flashing the bios...READ THE INSTRUCTIONS VERY CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FLASH IT...or it could distroy your bios entirely and you would have to order a new mb or new bios chip.

4) Perhaps your power supply does not have enough power...or that the power going through your house is not continous...(this senario is not very likly tho)

hope this helps....

One of our home computers (K6-2-400 on Asus P5A) has a similar problem. We do not touch anything till the boot process is completed. If we do, it sometimes hangs, but not always. When this happens, I reformat the hard disk and reinstall Windows98. Then the problem disappears. I suspect that the problem has something to do with abuses (?) such as hard shutoff, downloads, interrupted program executions, etc. since it happens only a while after fresh install.

I admit the possibility that the system is not superstable to begin with. So I plan to flash the motherboard with new bios sooner or later. This shouldn't hurt at least.

what are your system specs?

have u tried looking for BIOS updates?

u might want to try disabling quickboot feature in the BIOS settings

buildingacomputer: I had K6-2 350 with a regular InvalidPageFault error that would not go away with any driver, any reformatting or reinstalling, or any BIOS flash. The only thing that EVER stopped it for good was dropping my FSB from 100MHz to 95MHz. (Fortunately it was happy at 4x95MHz - so it didn't bother me much 🙂

spenceOU: I would have suggested what AC said too - that making sure the Quick Boot is disabled too.
I was also wondering (completely speculatively) if a motherboard can handle mice and keyboards in either PS/2 port, and that maybe on initial boot up - it expects them the other way around, but after resetting, is happy where they are.
Just a thought.
