I'm between the Gigaworks 700w and the Klipsch ultra promedia.

No budget limit, I just want good sound. plugs into my sound card.

Plz don't say anything Bose....

Klipsch promedia will be better but I would recommend getting into a starter bookshelf speaker plus receiver combo for some good 2.0 or 2.1 sound and work from there. That way the system can grow as your wallet does.

Something like an Onkyo receiver + a pair of speakers from Axiom audio or av123.com. Hell, even some of the cheap primus speaker deals would be a good place to start.

With just a quick search....an example:

http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=3724383

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-633

This comes out to a tad shy of $400. Of course, I spent about 2 minutes searching and didn't try to look for good sales on a speaker pair and such(the polk R15 had some deals on it at outpost a week ago or so). But there is tremendous value here.

Another option is this Onkyo HTiB:

For $400 you then have something upgradeable, and will kick any computer speaker packages ass(IMO)

Happy shopping to you

No budget limit + good sound = I agree that there's no need to stick to "computer speakers"

I will not tell you to get bose 😉

Like PurdueRy said, you can get a decent 2.1 set going for $400-$600, and a decent 5.1 set for right around $1000 (or much cheaper if you do HTIB like he mentioned).

Maybe you weren't thinking of anything like this and thus said no budget limit when there really is one. Do you have one now?

I just jumped on the hi-fi wagon this weekend, and it is well worth it. If you're living in the US you are very lucky as I got screwed over with pricing in Canada. Bookshelves are especially strong in music, but they are just as detailed in games. Going from computer speakers to shelves, the soundstage is huge, everything is more directional and crisper. You can probably get a refurbed Onkyo receiver($100-$200) like others have said, and go for some 'budget' speakers such as the Infinity P150 (great value in US, rip off in Canada), Athena AS-B1 (same), Paradigm Atoms or really really cheap Insignias from Best Buy if they're available; all are around $100-$150 -ish US. These may be budget, but blow any computer speakers away. If you want to upgrade, you can move front speakers to different positions (rear) or use them for another setup. Also, these can be continually upgraded, but those two computer speaker sets are it. There is nothing past the Ultras or Creatives in terms of quality.

However, just remember that the price you pay for 2.0 bookshelves and receiver will be the same as those 5.1/7.1 setups. That and if you're use to having a computer sub, you WILL miss it a lot if you don't get start with at least 2.1 (I never knew what a difference the sub made, and now I need one🙁). Also a note on the Klipsch Ultras: they seem to have a huge design defect/flaw that causes more than an acceptable number of blowouts, which you probably have to pay for. Just check their official forums. If you need more 'literature':Q, go check out tomshardware or sharkyextreme sound forums. Regardless, good luck on whatever you decide.
