Computer Speakers for HT Setup

AMDZen

Lifer
OK so I am looking for a set of 5.1 (or better) speakers that I can use for an HT setup. My friend had the Logitech Z-680's and they were awesome for this purpose, and quite a bit less then what you would end up spending going all out on an HT setup. ANd also quite a bit better then similarly priced HT AIO setups like from Sony.

What speaker sets are there out there right now that have the analog as well as the digital and optical ports that would work for a normal HT setup? Any help is greatly appreciated. I wish I could find a new set of the Logitech Z680s i would just get those but they've been discontinued so it would seem

The logitech z-5500s are the replacement set for the 680s.

If you're looking for a HT set that has many inputs and you'll be able to build upon, Onkyo makes some nice HTIB options compared to Sony. ShopOnkyo often has some pretty decent deals on refurb units which make them even more affordable.

The quality of the receivers is pretty good for the price and they'll serve you fairly well if you want to upgrade the speakers down the road.

I'd vote for an Onkyo HTIB as well if your budget allows for it.

With it you can always replace the front speakers later to improve music reproduction, and I haven't seen a PC speaker set that lets you do this easily.

I've gone the onkyo htib route.

Speaks aren't anything to write home about, but the reciever is just dandy for someone wanting price/performance in the low-midend range.

Hope to pair it up with a nice 2.1 for music someday.

edit: I should add I got in on the 6dvd changer/htib deal a while back. The rec. was supposed to be refurhbished...looks brand new, not a scratch on it what so ever.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I've considered getting a used z-680 but that was because I couldn't find which speakers replaced them. Newegg doesn't have the z-5500 and a few other sites I checked didn't either. It seems Newegg has also stopped carrying the higher end Klipsch which was another option. I also worry about getting blown speakers from eBay.

I might consider going the Onkyo HTIB route - i'll need to save up more money before I decide any way since I plan on getting a few other things as well. I just think the z-5500 will do what I want and for $280 you can't beat that.

Thanks again

I got my Z5500's at GlobalComputer.com... I'm very happy with them. They have them in stock now it looks, but they are up in price from what I paid at the time.

HEY PLUGGING THE Z5500's IS MY JOB!

I been using a set of Z5500's as a ht set up for almost 2 years. Cheap, and sound freakin great with the 188 Watt RMS 10" sub. Wont use anything else and will cry the day they break, if they break, they take a beating almost every night and come back for more 🙂
I loved them so much I bought 2 sets when I had the money 🙂

Very hard to beat getting a amp, dd and dts decoder, matching speakers, and a massively powered 10" sub for $300 or less, IMO 😉
OH and THX cert as well.
