i recently installed windows 2000 pro with SP1. when i empty the recycle bin, or change the volume with the windows volume control, the PC speaker beeps. is there anyway to stop this? i have checked in the sounds and multimedia options but it seems to only be for sound files. i can't work out how to turn off the PC speaker, and as you can imagine this is very annoying.

any help? thanks.

If I am not mistaken the sound you hear when changing the Windows volume using the speaker icon / slider indicates how loud you have reset the volume slider. You should not have to reset that more than once unless you have a program that has a very weak sound output.

Can you explain why you are changing your volume level so often that it becomes an irritation for you?

Another very strange non problem some turn into a problem. Tsk, tsk. :Q

To change or turn off sound events do this:

Click on Start/Settings/Control Panel.

In Control panel select SOUNDS.

In the Sound Properties menu click on the sound you wish to eliminate. There is a long list of sound events and some have sounds attached to them. Scroll up and down to see them all.

If there is a sound event attached to an item in the list it will show an icon in the Preview window. On the right side of that Preview window is a button with an arrow point to the right. Click on that button and it will preview the sound selected for that sound event. That is you will hear it.

To the left of the Preview window is an item titled NAME:. Click on the down arrow and it will show a long list of sound events you can choose for that particular event.

To eliminate any sound for that item you selected scroll all the way to the TOP of the list and select NONE. Problem solved and no more sound when clicking on the problem, for you, sounds.

Problem solved.

Side note. For the Recycle Bin I changed its icon to look like a toilet. When deleting files in the Recycle Bin my sound is a toilet flushing. Just for fun only.

Gorgonzola, I know what you're talking about.

JohnLog - What he's talking about is that the PC speaker beeps when emptying the recycle bin or adjusting the volume. That is an irritant. I didn't spend money on speakers to have the PC speaker be an indicator of volume or to let me know the recycle bin empties.

I've disabled all sound events but the PC speaker still beeps to let me know that the recycle bin has been emptied.

johnlog, like Spoooon said, i am referring to the sound that comes out of the speaker within my comuter case. not the desktop speakers. therefore disabling the windows sounds (which i had already done) does not stop this.

anyone solved this problem? on my friends computer it doesn't happen, but i have a feeling his internal speaker is dead and doesn't actually work at all.

I have the same problem as well as my friend. He removed it using TweakUI for win2k. Just so U know. Neither of us have a beep when changing the volume only when emptying the thrash bin.

Gargonzola,

I am having difficulty in understanding how a Windows sound event can be coming from your computer's speaker when you have a sound card installed?

The only time you should hear the case speaker is when you are booting up. Or there is a problem with your mother board.

The sound from the trash can is a Windows sound. Using the task bar sound icon to change the volume level is a Windows sound.

How was anyone able to change that to use the case speaker? The only way is if you do not have a sound card installed. :frown:

johnlog, its not the windows sound that is coming from the internal speaker. the speaker just beeps when the recycle bin is emptied. my soundcard still plays the actual windows sound for it (untill i disabled it). my soundcard is working fine, its just that windows was wanting to use the internal speakers beep for some events as well. it seems this doesn't only happen on my computer either. AoD said he had the same thing happen, aswell as one of his friends.

tweakui fixed the prob anyway, so it doesn't matter anymore.

Gorganzola,

I asked other members of my local computer club about hearing Windows sounds from their internal case speaker and none of them say it happens on their computers.

So for you to hear sounds from your case speaker you had to tweak something in order for the case speaker to make a sound.

Or you are mistakenly hearing an error beep on the internal speaker thinking it is caused by Windows somehow.

Since none of my computer club buddies are having sounds eminating from their internal case speakers while running Windows we have no cure for your sound problems.

We all have sound cards installed and are using amplifed speakers.

Of course, you can always disconnect the two speaker wires and that will stop all internal speaker sounds. Or add an on/off switch on your speaker wires.

johnlog: It isn't every mobo that do this. Me and my friend have had this problem since the first time we both installed Win2k, but a lot of my other friends doesn't have the problem. As far as I can see it's a problem with the P3B-F from Asus. I don't know but it's the only mobos I've heard this from. I don't know what mobo gorgonzola have and it would be interesting to know if it actually is a P3B-F.

Aod, i actually dont have that mobo. i have a Gigabyte GA-6BXC. i guess its just the way some mobo makers incorporate the use of the internal speaker.
