Computer sound card not working

My motherboard has an nForce2 chipset and sound used to work in the past but stopped working. Checked all the normal stuff, make sure it wasn't muted, volume was turned up, speakers are working, no bad devices in device manager, removed/reinstalled devices in device manager.

Since that didn't solve it, I went out and bought a cheapo $15 PCI sound card and installed it. Verified working within device manager, chose the 2nd sound card via control panel > sound and audio devices > audio tab > new sound card (C-media). Tried playing sound from different sources (flash, mp3, wav) but still no output.

I then booted the machine off an Ubuntu LiveCD and no sound there either. I also toggled between primary and secondary sound cards but no sound comes out.

Any suggestions?

I just checked, onboard is enabled within BIOS.

I rechecked with Ubuntu LiveCD and I can get sound out of the PCI card but not onboard. However I still cannot get PCI sound working in WinXP.
