Computer Slow-Down---

System - athlon classic 800,ECS mobo, 384mb PC-100, but all that i dont think is important...


because I have a 20gig(7200) running as master and a 60gig(5400) running as slave, and i can feel a slowdown on the computer when the comp is running with the 60gig on... and when I have the 60gig unplugged or not hookedup the computer runs alot "faster"... anyone know how to fix this slow down? besides getting a new 7200 drive? thanks!

Weird .. the only thing I can think of is that they are sharing the same IDE channel .. so if you are reading off of both at the same time you're probably using up all the bandwidth on that IDE channel .. try hooking up the second drive on the secondary IDE .. I guess you have a CDROM too eh .. put the second HDD on the secondary controller with the CDROM and leave your boot drive on it's own .. or some combination where they don't share the same IDE channel .. is that board ATA66?

and yes its AT66... anyone know what combination i should try with these 4 drives... like what combination i should use instead of 1master20gig/1slave60gig/2mastercdrw/2slavecd

Are they both running in DMA mode?

Yeah, make sure that DMA mode is enabled ..
settings > system > hardware > Device manager > IDE/ATA atapi controllers

Look in there and make sure your hard drive is on DMA.

If you want to switch up your configuration .. what I would do is stick your primary hard drive and your CDRW on the primary IDE controller, and your secondary HDD and CDROM on the secondary IDE controller. That way, (I'm assuming that you burn CD's off of the secondary storage drive?) when you burn CD's you have each device on it's own controller, and when are just using your comp, one hard drive to each controller. Just my .02¢

theres no DMA for me to select when i go into controlpanal/system/hardware/harddrive or ide devices its just sync data transfer/ disconnect... but i know what you mean my other computer has DMA mode...anyone know why thers no "DMA" for me to ::check:: or select?

check in your bios to make sure DMA is set to auto. And in the device manager its under IDE controlers (Primary and Secondary) check there and if you have problems from there read the faqs section it covers DMA mode.

i checked my bios.. i made sure its in "ultra DMA" enable mode... and it is....

but i just checked the system> system properties.. and this is what i get...

If you see both messages, see the Help for the Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance message first.
If you only see the message Drive X is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system on one drive, that drive is using an MS-DOS compatibility (real-mode) driver, which may reduce that drive?s performance. Contact your hardware manufacturer to see if an updated driver is available for your drive. If not, the drive?s performance may be less than optimal, but you can still use it.



on the list it says... "Drive C is useing MS-DOS compatibilty mode file system...and Drive D is useing MS-DOS compatibility mode file system" anyone know how to get it out of this mode? i cant figure out how? thanks
