Computer Situation....

I'm at college and I've found out that I use my computer much less then I ever though I would... I can easily say I use it less than an hour a day... I'm usually out working/studying or hanging out with kids I've met so far.

Right now, I have two computers... one is an Apple iBook I bought today from the apple store, and the second is a highend computer.... listed below...

Shuttle SN25P
AMD X2 3800+
7800 GT
2 GB Ram
250 GB Hard Drive
20" Dell Widescreen LCD

Now, what I'm thinking about doing is selling the highend computer... I thought I'd play computer games, but the first week and a half I've been here I haven't even come close to touching BF2 or Farcry... It seems to me that I don't use it enough to justify the cost of the computer... while it is nice being able to have a highend computer... if I rarely use it, and don't do anything that even makes it begin to sweet leads me to think I should just sell it.

I'm keeping the LCD.... I cannot stand the 1024*768 of this iBook if I'm doing anything other then word documents.... I still do photoshop/dreamweaver work, so I need a relatively high resolution to work comfortably.

What I'm thinking of doing is....

Selling my current desktop... buying a lower end dell that's on sale or buying an iMac/G5 tower. Keeping this laptop, and saving the rest of the money that I get from selling the parts from my high end computer....

What would you guys do? There is nothing that is preventing me from going over to a complete mac platform... other then playing games... (namely AOE3 when it comes out) but when I'm in college I don't need the distraction of games anyways.

 
Why hold onto something you aren't using which is only going to be worth less as time goes on? Sell it now while people still have money early in the semester. You could probably buy a comparable unit back late in the semester for half.
 
I'm keeping the iBook no matter what... I had a G3 and I sold it... I found out that was a mistake like a week after I sold it.... now I have the G4 and I probably won't sell it until just before the Intel ones are supposed to come out.

I'm still debating on what I'd like to buy as a replacement for my SN25P, and if it didn't play games that'd be all the better... it's just one more distraction to add to the million I already have.
 
i had the same mentality that you had during college. i was told by my parents that i'd be getting a desktop for college, but i desperately wanted a laptop. my folks said that as a graduation gift, i'd get a laptop, so i opted for a low-end dell laptop and said i'll do what i need to do with the desktop as i play out my first few months at college.

i had a great time in college, but eventually, the "orientation" feeling wears out. furthermore, i'm not sure if you're living in a double or single right now, but since i was living in a double as a freshman, i didn't have much room and decided to just stick around with the laptop. i told my parents that they can hold off on my desktop "necessity" as i was enjoying time with my newfound friends and didn't feel the need for it.

eventually, though, i had more freedom (naturally) when i lived in a single as a sophomore, and i told my parents that i wanted the desktop again. unfortunately, for me, they said that the deal was good for freshman year only, so i bought a computer using money that i earned at my campus job, and i was much happier. a low end laptop doesn't last. i ended up keeping the desktop (actually, i rebuilt it over time as it was initially built by a friend of mine when i wasn't too familiar with computer hardware) and i sold the laptop for $700 (i was lucky for that price. it was a celeron 366). i bought a new laptop and had a better desktop by the time i graduated, and even inherited an old p3 550 from the networking facility where i worked -- to learn linux. (i tossed that one out last year as it totally died)

maybe your computer is sitting around collecting dust, but you can find practical uses for it: movies, music, gaming (when you want to procrastinate), and more. mine became a media center, and i was the envy of my friends 🙂 (then again, i'm not your typical girl)

i would give more time before making a decision to sell the desktop... you're in party mode now, but it won't last forever.

if you have made up your mind to sell it, then do it ASAP. dont wait and falter and reconsider. Just sell it.

they depreciate like mad. and with sales and rebates... you will lose money every day that you wait.

make the decision and do it.

That's what my username is from.... Qurazy is on the back of the box...

I am in a double, and I do plan on being in a single/apartment next year. I know things will cool down, but next year if it does get boring, I can always buy/build a highend computer from the money I make from selling mine now. Considering M2 processors will be out... Windows Vista won't be far behind and a new generation of video cards will be out aswell. I'll probably have a new iBook at that time aswell. (considering the Pentium-M based ones should be out early next year... I hope)
 
well, then sell it now, not later. but keep in mind that you will probably invest in a new one next year regardless of where your mind is now 😛
 
If you're in any type of computer-related major - keep it. You may well need a PC (and god knows you don't want to be using lab computers)
 
I'm staying as far away from computers as I can.... hopefully. (major wise) I have a job right now at the Cyclotron (at MSU) doing computer support but that doesn't mean I want to do it for the rest of my life...

Right now I'm eyeing becoming a Chiropractor or something similar.

By the way... the only reason I'm on the computer now is because I'm back at home... I would most definately be hanging out in East Lansing with friends or something along those lines.
