Computer shuts down on its own

I'm not sure what forum it goes so I will put in hardware and software.

A computer with a PIII 650MHz cpu, 128 meg PC100 ram, Asus P3B-F mainboard, CL 16 bit sound PCI, Lucent 56K v.90 modem, Netgear NIC, Plextor 8x 4x 32A CDR, Hitachi 10x DVD,
Guillemot 3D Prophet SDR video, running WIN98SE, Will just shut down on its own. First the computer wouldn't shut down.

Would anyone have any clues?
Thanks in advance

It's telling you that you need to get out more. 😀

I have no earthly idea -- it could be any number of things. The not shutting down part initially sounds like the Windows bug that made the computer hang. Spontaneous shutdowns could come from a variety of causes. Are you doing anything particular when it does this (opening a program, internet connection, nearing sleep mode, etc.)?

Maybe there's a hardware conflict in that stuff, but I don't know anything in particular about that equipment.

That happened twice to me on a Tyan 133A board, but it hasn't happened to me yet on this Abit KT7

The reason it wouldn't shutdown is probably the Windows 98 "shutdown bug" As for the other problem, make sure powersaving isn't set to some strange setting designed for laptops. Check Windows and the BIOS.

I'd investigate the bios settings and power settings as mentioned, but also keep in mind your power supply if it is old or small. A failing or underrated power supply will cut out like that. This is moreso when overclocking your vid card and cpu.

Thanks all for your replies.
The computer is not mine. It is a friends dauhter at school. She will call me tonight and let me know the details.
But I built it and had it running for two weeks before I gave it to her. It worked fine then.

Sounds like the power saving mode selected in the BIOS is saving wayyy too much. I have seen this happen with both the entire system failing to wake-up and on another system where just the monitor refused to wake-up.

Before you go there to check it out have her turn the machine on and leave it alone. Hopefully, she will leave it on about an hour before you get there, then you will be able to tell whether it really shut-down or if it is simply in a faulty power-saving mode.

Check both the system power saving modes, and the monitor standby mode.

ADDED:
If you are going to her place, check to make sure the computer is not on a circuit that is controlled by a light-switch. Doh!

Well I talked to her last night and it seems that this all started when she had her computer hooked up to the schools modem lines. The school does not offer phone lines to the students just modem lines. Once she was on-line (AOL) and when she tried to log off the computer to a BSOD and had to do a hard reboot. It happened again when she was listening to cd on the computer.
Well we checked the BIOS settings and they were set correctly.
I saw that her ASUS BIOS rev was 1005 and I know 1006 is out, didn't see anything at the ASUS web site about this problem.
Oh well I 'll see what eles I can find out.
