So i was burning a cd on my system
key specs
P4 3.2 prescott
asus adsl2 deluxe
1.5 gb ram
500gb seagate
6600 gt...
antec 500w power supply
windows xp
dell 20" LCD with dvi/vga

anyway like after a few minutes i returned to find my computer off i found that odd and it wouldn't reboot...
so i reset power switch and then computer starts up fans running ect no image on screen
then i opened case video card fan making odd noise
so i removed it dusted it applied new thermal paste
still nothing
tried resetting a few times no dice...
BUT the odd thing is that I tried two keyboards and neither would work i.e. turning on caps lock number lock...
So i am guessing its video card but i dont have another to test...
any ideas maybe i missed something any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

If you happen to have another decent-quality power supply, you might want to try it as a fact-finding step.

Thanks mechBgon
the problem is i don't have any half decent ps around
maybe tomorrow when i get home i can remove almost everything extra to lower the load...
also i guess it couldn't hurt i will try the ps that came with my case some generic crap
also with the keyboard thing and the no image but fans spinning is it likely that it is the ps?

It could be the PS, yeah. I guess another test you could try, is to power up the system without any video card installed, and see if it gives you beep codes and keyboard lights when there isn't a video card. Ditto for the RAM. It's always a hassle playing Hunt Down The Bad Component?... good luck! :)

LOL yea that game is no fun without the guide...
also i tried powering on the pc without a video card and there were no beeps and the keyboard still didnt work
i have spare ram so i will try the ram as soon as i get a chance as well as the psu and keep you updated
thanks again

You can try to reset the cmos on the motherboard. You don't need any spare parts for that. I don't think you would get any fans spinning if your power supply choked, try the cmos thing and i've had a situation where physically removing the cpu and putting it back did the trick.

If you leave the computer on without video, does it continue to boot to windows? Can you hear sound when windows loads? If that's the case, it's def your video card. Don't forget to plug the power into the video card if required.

If i leave it on i don't get the windows loading sound and the keyboard doesn't respond i.e. turning on caps lock the little green light doesn't go on
