Computer Shut Down During Gaming

I was playing Sim City 4 and my computer shut down on me. I restarted and everything was fine. But apparently main switch on the casing switched off by itself, what could have caused it? I recently changed my fsb from 133 to 166 because my Athlon XP 2700+ is suppose to run at 2.1ghz, instead it was running at 1.73ghz because of the 133fsb. i also checked my cpu temp, it was at 62 degree celsius, does that mean trouble and i should turn it back down to 133?

Many MBs nowadays have a shut-off feature when the CPU temp reaches a specified point. You should check this in your BIOS. If that is the problem, you can either raise the set point or take steps to lower your temp. 62C is a little high, but not unreasonable.

I suppose with all the tweak features MBs have now, it's concievable they have over-temp protection for other vital MB components (such as the chipset). I can't say for sure, but it might be worth looking into.

Barring over-temp protection, the PS is the most likely culprit. If possible, check it against one that's known to function properly under heavy load.

A faulty power buton is a possibility, but an unlikely one. It is, however, extremely easy to fix as it is a simple momentary-on pushbutton affair and can be replaced with any switch of similar function.

Hmm, well i just installed with asus probe cd which monitors my cpu. right now its at 60c and says its ok. im running sim city 4, lets see what happens. ohh yes, i did bring down the fsb back to 133 from 166. plus, ive got four sets of fans installed, all of them functioning, how can i get overheat issues.

I could write several pages on ways of reducing your temps, but there's already a ton of that info in the cases/cooling forum, much of it better than what I could give you. I would suggest checking over there. Folks over there live for sharing tips and tricks.
 
Well, in the other thread you were saying that your fsb was at 133, and your cpu was running at 1.7 Ghz or so. Then you bumped it to 166, which now has it running at 2.17 Ghz. Your memory is PC2700, so it should be fine at 166. I would look at cooling first, then the memory.

Before you bumped it to 2.17 Ghz, you didn't have any problems, but now you do. I would start with the cooling, as others have said. Did you install the heatsink properly? Did you use thermal grease first? What is your case temp or motherboard temp compared to your processor temp? Do you have adequate ventilation? These questions are easy to answer and a good place to start. You can always drop your fsb back to 133 and see if your temps drop and your pc stops crashing.

And in my mind, 57C idle is way too hot. Once you start playing videogames it will make your temps go even higher. And as was said, Asus Probe and other software temp utilities are not all that accurate. I would consider the reading a ballpark figure at best.
 
MB Temp is 27C. Everything was properly installed as far as i know. But system is running just fine right now, although the FSB is at 133.
 
If the MB temp is 27C, and the CPU temp is 57C, you definately need to check your heatsink/fan or buy a better one (in my opinion). Seems it's not doing it's job.

Here's the problem...the stock HSF should be more than enough to run your chip at stock speeds. All thats left in the equation is your HSF application skills. I would remove the HSF, clean any goop off the chip (clear nail polish remover or rubbing alchohol) and start over with a fresh application of thermal paste. You can get this at Best Buy, Microcenter, Radio Shack, etc.
 
I will do that. The weird part is that my case/mboard temp sits at 27-29C no matter how much i overclock, but while playing games, the CPU temp goes upto 62C and at idle, sits around 52C.

Not really wierd, motherboards and cases rarely get oven hot like CPUs do. I think it's really just a sign that the CPU isn't making good contact with the heatsink.
 
Yea, ill just clean it out, plus ill take out the covering of all the empty casing slots for more air to flow through. according to AMD tech support, temps are just fine.
 
Read these instructions on how to apply Heatsink compound properly, and i suggest buying decent Compound like AS, especially if you overclock. You paid for 2700+ so you should put it at 166 MHz FSB, and see about reducing temps. If there is a pad on the heatsink clean in it off with Nail polish remover or Alcohol and clean off the die as well.

this stuff looks complicated. the good thing is that my processor package is under warranty for three years ! i will try and do some cleaning.
