Why is it that almost every computer science class requires math? I dont understand how math could fit into network security, or introduction to operating systems.. wtf!

It's a matter of problem solving skills that come with a good mathematical foundation. I mean I see those friends of mine who just BS through calculus. They don't care for proofs or mathematical understanding. When it came to "flashcards" that our teacher gave us, most people treated it like memorizing. I on the other hand (not to brag) tried to derive the definition on the flashcard through the concept itself. It wasn't so much memorizing for me as the concept coming alive...
And it's the same kids who memorize who just somehow BS through computer science. They don't care for execution time, efficiency, good memory usage, etc. They just make sure it works and they're done. They don't optimize, debug effectively or do anything right. They write this ugly 300 line program that can be done in less than 80 lines with recursion, and they show me this beast that barely functions with horribly coded if and else statements... Please.
Okay.. Math required for network security? tackle that one?

How is it BS? You can't program without using math. Even the simplest of programs use basic math.
It's something as simple as what do you do when your computer fails to boot. You go through a logical set of steps to determine what's wrong..
1) Reboot
fails?
2) Ok try safe mode
fails?
3) Blue screen error? Ok, try Windows recovery console.
4) Still fails? Ok, let's start checking htat HD for errors. Plug it in as a slave drive on another comp and run CHKDSK and check SMART utilities.
5) Bad? Ok, let's start pulling data off.
6) Get a copy of Windows up on a temp drive and start pulling data off the old drive
7) If the drive is still good, do the same and reinstall Windows on that same drive and copy data back.. otherwise ur looking at anew HD
simple things like that.
Or programming. How do you plan on storing your data? Do you want to index your database to optimize speed? Or do you want to simply let it use regular searching algorithms.. Which is faster for the amount of data you have?
It all takes logic, some math, and definitely problem solving skills.
Math isn't all about 1 + 1 or simple calculations right. Nor is it simply the area under a curve or doing statistics tests to see if there is statistically significant evidence for blah blah...
6 / 10 problems on our midterm today was proofs and demonstrations. The emphasis is on being able to have that mindset to show certain things or prove certain things in a logical and mathematical fashion....
Networking has a lot of mathematical concepts deeply rooted in linear algebra....

I guess I understand.. Im just soooo bad at math, and I would really like to get into computer science
I guess I view it as them weeding out the people who aren't serious about their major. I really have no other idea why they would have that sh!t as a requirement.
Yeargh! I havent taken a math class in years, I quit math as early as I could, now I have to take college math

lol...all I mean by my posts is that it seems to me that in acquiring my BS, I took a sh!tload of classes that I'll never use. Sometimes it just seems to be a $$$$-making scheme.

Haha, I know what you mean, but the point of an education (engineering, at least) is to teach you how to THINK about problems, not the specifics of solving them, really.
