1006, then.

One possible solution is to order a new BIOS chip from BadFlash.com that you have them pre-load the 1008 BIOS onto, and swap BIOS chips. Or maybe call TigerDirect and explain the situation and ask if you can exchange for a 130nm processor that'll run with the existing 1006 BIOS.

is there no way to actually flash the bios using some sort of alternative method other than having to consult tigerdirect or paying someone to preload it in? tigerdirect's customer service dept sucks. waited on the phone for over and hour and received no help from them.

I don't know if this is true or not, but someone stated that you can

1) download the BIOS from Asus and extract it from the Zip file it comes inside of

2) put the new BIOS on floppy and rename it to A8V.ROM

3) put the floppy into the drive, power up the system and immediately hold down ALT F2 as quickly as possible

4) see if the system hits the floppy drive and loads up the new BIOS (there probably will be no video during this procedure)

5) after floppy activity has ceased for a while, hit the Reset button and see what you get

Grasping at straws, but hey... nothing much to lose at this point ;)

update... well this is what i tried... i clear the cmos, and then i boot the computer... surprisingly it posts... but, it doesnt run through the ide check or proc/mem check. no award bios or whatever.

first it shows a screen with the asus a8v mobo. then it goes into something about the cmos error or whatever, cant remember the exact words. it gives me two choices. one, F1 to go to setup, F2 to load defaults. i tried both. when i push f1, it takes me to the bios screen. so i set my date and time and exit. do i need to do anything else at this point? in the bios, i also checked up on the cpu and mobo temp. it read about 30 degrees cel for the processor. so i figure, hmm if thats very close to accurate, then the processor is fine right? the case temp read about 20 degrees or so. so then i save and exit, and it tries to restart, but doesnt post anymore. it just showed a blank screen like before. i tried to restart and doesnt work. then i cleared cmos again, and this time i selected F2 to load defaults, and then right away it gave me a blank screen again. asdflkja;lksd. ok so what other alternative do i have now? should i flash the bios somehow? and if yes how do i do it? i mean i dled that bios 1008 update and did as you said about renaming it to .ROM. but when i stick it in there, and try to make it read, it says data invalid or something along those lines. please help.

That's a step in the right direction. What I would do first, once I was into the BIOS, is to set the memory voltage to 2.8 volts so there's no doubt they're getting enough voltage, then Save & Exit and allow it to proceed through the next POST (assuming it shows up). Once it stalls for lack of bootable devices, then shut it down, get your 1008 BIOS on floppy, and update it using the ALT F2 method shown in your manual.
