Computer restarts without reason

Actually.. there must be a reason for the restarts. But I've so far changed these perh.(can't spell it): CPU, memory, hdd, graphiccard (only from AGP to AGP), keyboard, mouse, CD and no more I think.

With the current mainboard that I have (ASUS A7M 266) the reboots seem to occur when the video mode is being changed from DOS (VGA) to SVGA (320x240 and higher, those screens you find in the Win2k DOS installation).

I also tried with an ASUS A7A 266 mainboard but that mainboard locked up my keyboard in the BIOS and I couldn't continue.

I've also tried a card from MSI.. but that mainboard doesn't even boot up.. I'm not getting a welcome screen even.. nada! As if the CPU would be bad.. but it's not. I've replaced it.. and the same error is still there.

So, what do you think could be the problem?
Could it be the power supply? I have a 300W power supply. I had it opened up a couple of month ago and installed a thingy that made it possible to controll the speed of the fan. It was WAY too noisy. But that fan eventually died on me and wouldn't run at all.. so right now I run with an external fan (that I bought, one of those small, 10cmx10cm fans) and had it put inside the powersupply. It seems to work.
But I think there still might be some kind of error inside the power supply.

Can I test it without replacing it? I don't have the money.. but still wanna test it to see if it's guilty for all my troubles.

Woo, a long message. Hope you dont mind 🙂

Thanks in advance for your answers.

hm... interesting predicament your in. I am going to assume that your mainboard works fine, CPU ... So, can you even get to an OS when you have the regular mainboard in? What OS are you running? Have you tried formating, reloading ...? If all else fails, you can buy a new power unit, test it out then return it for your money back. But before yo do that, make sure when you switch out all these components (to test them out) that you actually set them up right. ... You'd be surprised how many dumb mistakes you make when your in a rush (or panicked) and make you think something else is the problem.
... One more thing to do: Step away from computer and go do something else (without thinking about computer). Come back with a fresh mind and start all over. Try that, that works wonders 😛

most of the time system restart w/o any reason caused by cpu running way off specs. If you did not overclock at all--prolly something else caused it.

hehe.. I've been away all day. Not even touching a computer. So that's not the problem here 🙂

The thing is that these reboots ALWAYS happens at the same places.
I'm running Win2k and Win98. I'll try to explain:

I can install Windows 98 in DOS.. without any problems. But as soon as the copying of files to the HDD is complete..and it has restarted. it won't continue. It starts the booting sequence and bam I get "Windows protections error."
I've also noticed that during the DOS-boot that my MODE.com (that controlls languages etc etc) has a problem being initialized correctly. I'm receiving this error: "Code page not supported on this device". What the crappers is that all about??

I've taken out all other cards, except for the video card and hdd's so that I can do the installation. It can't be wrong on the HDD either cuz I've tried taking out ALL the HDD's and run with the Win2k Installations CD only and the same thing happens anyway. After the files have been copied to the HDD and it's about to continue (changing resolution is what it is doing) it restarts itself.

I'm so angry at this computer.. I think I have a blow tourqe somewhere and a hammer.. and a bulldozer. That should fix it!! 😀

Edit: Oh BTW, I've tried chaging the Video card to another videocard but that didn't help either. I've yet not tried changing to a PCI card.

Damn computer. May they burn in "sodom & gomorra" (ummh)

And no I'm not overclocking.
Oh.. my specs are:
Asus A7M 266, PC2100 256Mb, 1.2 Mhz DDR Athlon. 30+10Gb HDD. GeForce2 GTS (Elsa).

I suspect a weakened PSU. I had thaqt happen to me all the time before I got my Enermax 330W. Try a different one and see if your situation improves.

Today I also tried with a different PS unit. No difference AT ALL! Same restarts at the same places.

I'm so MAD. What can it be?

I'll try to make a new clean install. And I'll also reset every hardware I have to default mode. And we'll see what happens.

My guess would be heat or possibly the MB is touching something and
grounding out.......
Try taking the MB out of the case, set it on some plastic and boot
up that way......
Greg

Yup, I've already done that.. it's on the table now with PS, hdd's and everything on the side. No case at all.

I'm on it right now and I believe it has something to do with the HDD's. Some kind of virus probably. But I hope it's not.
