Computer restarts on its own; then won't reboot

I was downloading an update to a program I had had for some time now. The update did not get all the way through when it caused my computer to hiccup and then reboot, only it didn't reboot fully. I finally got it to reboot and I quickly uninstalled the program along with the update hoping that was the problem but when I came down to the computer this morning it had restarted and didn't finish the reboot. Does anyone care to venture into this problem?

it would help alot more if you tell us where it stops during the reboot or if there are any errors even of there aren't.
if it starts to load windows and then restarts again you might want to do a windows restore point or a full restore using your windows CD. if your computer never starts to boot it is most likely hardware related and you might what to start with testing for heat and switching memory modules. this could also be the start of a failing drive

It would get to the windows xp splash screen and stick. It wouldn't go any further and just stay there. I couldn't go any further than that.
I did get it to reboot now and it has run over night without restarting. I unhooked my floppy, and both dvd burners to start my trials of what it could be that was causing the problem. I had already run a mem test and they were fine. The computer started after unhooking these three things. So, thinking I will be replacing one of the pieces mentioned above I plugged each one back in and rebooted. The funny thing is all three are plugged in and no problem any more. I don't know if just reseating the power cables had anything to do with it but it is working fine now. Wierd!😕
