Computer restarting

I have a computer which has had some issues with random restarts over the past few weeks. I first reinstalled the operating system thinking it was just software crashing which a fresh install would take care of.

It was fine for about a week and then started doing it again, today after one of its restarts it would not come back on at all. I opened it up, checked all the cables, reseated the cards, and when I plugged it in it immediately started (without even pressing the power button), but there was no signal reaching the monitor or anything else.

It appears that it is just the cpu fan which will start, the hard drive, and the front leds, but none of the critical components. Any idea what the issue could be?

Based on a reply elsewhere I figure it is almost undeniably the powersupply, but my question is that assuming the power supply went bad, with the odd behavior of just the fans and stuff starting is there a chance it took out some other components with it??

Update: I just used my DMM and all of the voltages checked out when I backprobed with the system on. You guys got any clues??

If running WINXP go into My Computer Properties(right click on My Computer and select properties). From there go to the Advanced tab and then go to settings under Startup and Recovery. From there make sure "Automatically Restart" is unchecked under System Failure. Let me know how this works out for you.
