Computer restarting again and again :(

hey guys, I'm trying to install Windows XP on my buddy's computer, but right after i choose the network settings it retarts..The setup: ECS board, P4 2.4Ghz B 533, 80GB maxtor Diamond Max9 drive. Earlier i thought it was heating issue.. checked Bios and the chip was running @ 45C.. I cleaned the heatsink fan, removed dust etc, Applied some AS 5 and now the temps have dropped to 30-35C 🙂.. Also Switched the Kingston 256Mb ram to 2x256Mb Corsair PC3200 XMS ram(Error free, tried & tested)

The PC is using Generic 250watt PSU, but the rails look fine in the bios. Nothing under volted, etc. His computer was running fine but recently started the restart problem.

Any help is much appreciated 🙂

First off... wow you really take care of your buddies LOL great job

reset bios
and also... if its an onboard NIC.... disable it ... and see if its a creating the issue... if you can install XP with the onboard disabled... you might want to spend 10 bucks for a pci nic... or after you install windows... enable the NIC and see if wiindows can load the driver after the install has finished.. it could just be something f00bar'ed with the driver install during the installation phase

Do a chkdsk /r using the Windows XP installation CD. If that doesn't work it's quite possible bad memory/hard drive.

i'd say the psu. 250 generic? oh hells no...

ecs can be stable. i run mine with a seasonic psu though. seasonic very quiet and efficient🙂 silentpcreview.com
