So I was wondering, how would one enter the field of law enforcement + computer-related crimes. I'm guessing an average cop would not have extensive IT experience as most ATOT members would have or be interested in. Is there a specific position inside a dept that would handle things like going through a person's HDD or tracing IPs to some guy who stole a laptop?

I'm guessing that you would become a police officer and then get xfered to a different section but yeah I always wondered about that since I've never seen a posting for such a position in public.

I thought most places hired consultants for this kind of stuff, like that catch a predator show using that Perverted Justice group.

If you are looking to be an IT-type investigator, you might want to look into the Private Investigations field. There are companies out there that specialize in all kinds of investigations, including IT/IS

Assuming you pass basic background checks, you could end up working for hire to both public and private sector investigations.

Yeah I think it would be an interesting field to get into but I've never heard of a company name or whatnot associated with the field other than some CSI episode.
