Computer rebuild, connot access internet

I just rebuilt a friends computer because he woke up to a relentless BSOD one morning, here are specs:

MSI socket A
900mhz Duron
256 Kingston SDram
GF2 MX
40 gig maxtor (ran Powmax and it passed)
WinXP pro corp.

It loaded XP fine but when I attach network cable it refuses to "find" internet (tried I.E., tried ping)...I have tried 2 different nic cards with the same result, I even did a XP repair install with no help.

HELP!

This happens all the time.

You need to reset your cable modem. Unplug it for a min and plug it back in. Your cable modem stores the MAC address of the last NIC it was connected to. If you try to hookup any other NIC to it without clearing the old NICs MAC address in the modem it will not work.

and as Jewno stated, make sure you have the drivers installed in the first place.
