computer rebooting itself, is it the PS?

i thought i had seen such a question in the forums before, but a search here and in OS forum yielded no results. anyway...

i was sitting here minding my own business, when my computer rebooted. i had no idea what was going on, so i just let it reboot. i had FlashFXP going, downloading some things, and it is set to keep the queue if you reboot, so you can resume where you left off, but the option wasn't there when i restarted, so it seems like the power may have blinked and not given it a chance save the queue.

anyway, friend of mine said that had happened once before to him, and that i had nothing to worry about. i thought "ok" and went on. so i'm doing some stuff on the computer, go to get something to drink, come back, and the computer is rebooting again! and again, the queue is not saved in FlashFXP.

so my question is, does this sound like my PS is going out on me? and is there any way to test it to make SURE it is or isn't the PS? and can someone recommend a good PS to buy, along w/ where on the net (such as newegg)?

i appreciate any insight you guys can give me!!

I have had this thing happen to me, but it is under a very special circumstance which probably does not apply to you.

My machine would reboot anytime I started a network game. Problem was that my NIC and Vid Card where sharing and IRQ. Once I separated them, they would play nice together and the reboot was gone.

If you just installed a new card, I would check to make sure it is not sharing an IRQ with anything that hogs PCI bandwidth.

sound like to me your cpu is overheating..my pc rebooted all the time when I had a cyrix. I put a very large HS and it solved my problem.

it did that to me using partition magic and win98.Got rid of partition magic and system never rebooted like thatagain

don't think it's the CPU overheating... i'm running my 1Ghz@1Ghz with the Taisol CGK760092 and my idle temp is around 33C

[edit] forgot to add full load is 41C, case temp is 30C [/edit]

These are the two possibilities from my experience:

(1) Power Supply
(2) Windows Crash

(1) - Usually the way that I have seen my PSs go is by "hiccups". I know that it sounds strange, but the two times that I have had a PS go, was that it started going out occasionally, just a little drop in power and the computer rebooted. Then the increased steadily until the PS was dead.

(2) - Another problem might just be that Windows is crashing so badly that it needs to reboot. This may be a possibility since you are running the same applications each time. I would try to reinstall the apps, and maybe a dirty install of Win2k over that.

Just some measly thoughts....

i don't have win2k set to auto-reboot in case of a crash... mainly so i can read and record the whole blue screen. thing is, i get NO blue screen, just happens. only happened those 2 times so far, but the way Schlocemus described it, seems like could be the start of the "hiccups"
