Computer quits to desktop or freezes during game play

So I was fixing a computer the other day. It would quit out of games in seemingly random spots. I reformatted, thinking there must be some software issue (I had run antivirus, etc., of course, but nothing fixed the problem). Of course, after reformatting the computer is doing the same damn thing. My guess was that it is a bad PSU. Do you think this could be the problem? The problem has NOT been occurring since they have bought the computer, and they have had no hardware changes.

Of note: During first reformat, I got a STOP 0x000007f error screen. Do you think it could be a RAM problem? I don't know what their exact hardware configuration is, so that won't help much. I want to make sure this is a PSU problem before I go out and buy a new one for them.

Thanks!

I would think it is a RAM or PSU issue.

Could try downloading and running MEMTEST3.2. That would rule out [or not] the RAM

Yeah. These people live far away so now I'm gonna be making at least 2 trips back. Gah. Anyone else have any other ideas?

Remember, it worked FINE with the SAME hardware configuration. Is it possible for memory or a PSU to just go bad? I know they can stop working completely, but as I said before, this problem only occurs in games.

All games. How woudl I combat the overheating video card problem, though? I am pretty sure the fan is working fine. Also, when the video card overheats, don't you usually see artifacts? That does not happen in this case.

what do you call all games -
hearts? minefield? doom?

What happens to the computer when playing these games, that doesn't normally??
more mouse keyboard action. more vga action. more cpu ram action. everything works harder, inc hdd.
more heat.
vga was just a guess, could be the whole system, or just the hdd, or a stick of ram.........
see where i'm coming from on this?
What does event viewer say?

Any full-screen 3d game. Pirates, HL2, Sims 2.

The games QUIT TO DESKTOP or occasionally freeze completely. The thing is, this person has been playing these types of games since he got the computer and never had the problems before. This seems like a freaking pain in the ass issue where I'm gonna have to basically bring my entire computer over to swap parts out and keep testing.

I haven't been able to see the event log, but I can remember the stop 0x0000007f screen.
