Ok, here's the problem. Last night i was dog sitting my parents puppy when all of the sudden my pointer disappears and mouse won't work, i look down and the dog had chewed a cord into 3 pieces. After further inspection i realize that it was my usb joystick cord, not my mouse. So i plug the mouse into a different port, reboot and it works fine for about 5 min then just shuts down, not the mouse the whole comp. Now it won't boot and all 4 lights on the usb bracket(msi k8n-neo2 platinum ultra) are red (processor damaged or not installed properly) so i take it that i fried my cpu. My questions are: is there a way to tell for sure it's fried or are the diagnostic lights enough and what all should i replace... besides the dog.

TIA for any and all help;)

system specs:
a64 2800 thermalright xp-90 w/thermaltake silent cat
msi k8n neo 2 plat ultra origional bios (not sure #)
1g muskin lvl1 3500(2x256)
2Xmaxtor80g sata(raid 0)
ati 9800pro w/arctic cooler
superflower 500w psu
light-on 56x cdr

Panic,

Welcome to the Forums!

What a weird problem.

It sounds as if something in the USB circuitry shorted as Fido was chewing.
Have you tried a PS/2 mouse? I know that doesn't fix the problem but it will make troubleshooting alot easier.

Try resetting the CMOS to see if that helps.
Does anythig plugged into the USB ports cause the same condition?

And... for crying out loud, get Fido a chew toy besides your PC! :D

thanks for the post kgbman,

I have tried to reset cmos, even took the battery out for half an hour, nothing. I will try to plug in ps/2 mouse off this comp next, but i cant even boot into bios, it just hangs right after start. Oh yea, Cash(black lab) is chewing on a rawhide as we speak lol ;)

*edit*
just tried the ps/2 mouse with no change:(

ouch. An easy fix would be a new mobo, if you dont get it sorted. Although just to make sure, i would try the system with another psu, if it doesnt boot, i think something on the mobo got shorted ^ fried and you need a new one :(.

thx for posting Azzy64, i never really thought about it being the psu but i'll try to borrow one off a friend that i think has an older one around just to see if it will boot then buy a new one if it does. One question though if it is the mobo got shorted do you think the cpu is still ok, or would that affect the cpu also? Don't want to buy a new mobo and destroy it with a bad cpu.
thx again for all the help:)

Don't worry about the processor, it's fine. Your dog shorted out the usb ports on your board, i've seen it happen a couple times already on MSI boards (one just by plugging in a joystick). Once you replace the board you'll be back in business.
