my mom claimed that she idiotically turned off the computer using the power switch instead of shtutting it down. now when it starts up, it gives a BSOD (during OS load under WinXP). The message talks about a:

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

is there a way to fix this without losing the info, basically without formatting.

Without knowing more, my first suggestion would be to stick the XP CD in your drive, set BIOS to boot from CD, then when the computer boots from CD, try the repair option.

I'm not sure why turning off the computer using the power switch would have that effect though.
