Computer problem

I'm about to replace this motherboard for my neighbor, but before I go buying one, I want to make sure I'm not overlooking anything.

I formatted his computer, installed XP, and got into it twice. However, now it won't boot anymore. Instead, it'll show a blinking underscore right after the boot splash screen.

Another two interesting things are that if you plug the PS/2 mouse in, the blinking underscore comes on before the splash screen and makes the keyboard not work. Also, pressing F1 to get into BIOS setup doesn't work.

I've tried resetting the CMOS and even reset the MBR using fdisk /mbr

Anyone?
 
usually with a bad mobo, the power supply won't kick up. could be a corrupt bios, which may be helped by reflashing it. i'd try that and if not, replace it.
 
ok, now that i think of it, you might not be able to even get a bootup disk working...so no flashing possible. man, i don't know i'll keep thinking about it...

actually, that's what i have right now. i think its probably a corrupt bios.

what happens is, when i start it up, before it posts, it shuts itself off. all the fans start up then it just shuts down before it can post. the post error i get using a post card is 25, which for the Award Bios is supposed to be "reserved" not much help there.

anyway, how do you flash the bios? do i need a special tool?
 
I flashed the BIOS with the latest one and still no luck. The blinking _ still comes up after the bios splash even with all the drives and pci cards (but video) removed. I can press CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot. However, if I plug any mouse in, then the blinking _ comes before BIOS even appears and the keyboard won't function.

It will boot off a floppy inserted in the drive. There are no beeping sounds, aside from the one standard beep.
