Computer Problem I think my 6600GT is defective

Hi,

I recently bought computer parts and put it together.
AMD 64 3000+ 939
Asus A8V-E Deluxe
Asus 6600GT
512 ddr400 Kingston RAM

So I put the computer together, and I instal my windows xp home. After I instal all motherboard drivers, my computers seams to not like to boot up properly I just get a black screen. I didnt know what was going on.

Eventually after like 5 restarts I get into Windows, and then install my 6600GT drivers. During the installation for the 6600GT drivers, there was an error in the setup. It said that some hardware was missing; now I am very puzzled. Then after I restart my computer it can never go into windows, all I see is an image of my desktop flickering on and off no mouse or keyboard control. Like I dont even hear that windows log in music. ( I waited atleast 10min).

Any of you guys have suggestions to solve my problem I greatly appreciate it.

PS. I did try some ram testing software, and it seams my ram is okay. Also I did check my connections and I dont think anything is wrong - everything is pushed in properly.

Do you have another video card (even an old one) that you can test in this computer? Or another computer you can test the 6600GT in?

If the 6600GT works fine in another computer but not in a new one, the card itself is probably OK. If a different video card works fine in the new PC, then there might be a configuration problem (or simply incorrect installation) or a compatibility issue between your motherboard and the 6600GT.

If neither video card works in the new computer, then something is wrong other than the video card and you'll need to do additional troubleshooting. Remove EVERYTHING from the computer except for the CPU, power supply, and one stick of RAM. Turn it on and see what error beeps you get. (Check the manual for the beep codes.) If you only get a video error, turn the computer off and plug in the video card, then try it again. Check to see what (if any) beep codes you get this time. If you don't get any errors, let it load Windows and see if you can take control of the system. If it works properly, turn the computer off and add one component at a time until the system becomes unstable. The last item you add before it 'breaks' is the one that needs attention.
 
Since you were having problems booting before you installed the video card drivers, I'd have to imagine the problem is not with the video card, but with the motherboard drivers. You may want to go into safe mode, remove the drivers for the video card and the motherboard, and try again. You shouldn't need to reinstall, but then that depends on whether you can even get into safe mode. If you can't get into safe mode, sorry, but computer = hosed. Probably need to do a repair, but a fresh reinstall shouldn't be needed.
 
And at this pt i just have the dvd rom, dvd burner, mobo, cpu, powersupply, and vga connected. I didnt bother connecting everything else.

I tried 2 different things now.

1st. I reformat computer, and before I instal any drivers I put in service pack 2. My computer is still unable to boot up, so I am confident its not the motherboard drivers.

2nd. I did burrow a friend's x300 from his work. (Its a computer store he works at) We were able to run the computer fine, first we reinstall mobo drivers and then video drivers. (Both worked fine). After I reboot computer; this time i hear the windows log in sound. However the screen is screwed up; I think its just the resoultion was set too high for my screen. (By default.. seams kinda wierd). Anyhow, I think it might be compatibility problem with the video card or the motherboard? But that doesnt make sense, should Asus VGA + Asus Mobo work okay.

Sry I am not familiar with the term above. But for configuration where would I get this fixed. The bios? I am fairly confident I pushed in the video card properly in the slot. Also lets say my 6600GT is a defect, is this a typical error I would get, problems booting up?

Well, here's what i would do. If you can boot into safe mode several times in a row, then that basically rules out a hardware problem and isolates a driver problem, since you're using default windows drivers. Also, if you change your resolution in safe mode, it will reset you resolution in regular windows mode back to its default values, typically 800 x 600. So after doing that, see if you can boot into regular windows. If not, it's not your resolution, and is therefore probably a driver problem. Though I agree with you, an Asus video card and motherboard you would think would work together rather well. If I'm not mistaken, you're using a PCI-E video card for that mobo, in which case, the most likely driver problem would be with the SMBus driver, so you may want to try again but this time don't install that driver. See what happens.

As for the service pack 2 issue, it does come with additional drivers that are installed. Does the computer ever freeze up during install or anything? Because the other thing that this problem reeks of is a possible ram issue. As all data that is installed on your computer goes through ram, whether os, service packs, drivers, everything software goes through your ram, it is often the culpret in problems like these.

I wish I could give you a definitive answer or help, but there are just several possible problems. Good luck.
 
Hrmm.. I decided to run into th bios to c what was going on. But when i go in there I go to the lan setting in the advanced section. Then the bios froze on me. It seams to freeze on a consistant baes when I go to that part of the bios setup.
