Computer Price War underway, and WE all win!

Dell has been QUITE SUCCESSFUL in its attempt to win the hearts and minds -- and wallets -- of the computer-buying public, to the extent that one in four PCs purchased today is a Dell. One of the big losers in this has been Gateway, whose sales nose-dived. Now, Gateway has decided to regain this lost market share any way they can. Among these ways: advertising. Expect to see a flood of Gateway commercials on TV (I saw my first tonight). Also among these ways: PRICE CUTS. Gateway is going head to head with Dell on pricing, and Dell is sure to respond. And with these two 500# gorillas both cutting prices to the bone, the other "me, too" players will have to come along... as will the ma and pa system builders. They won't be able to sell their system for $1,200 when a comparable Dell can be had for $600!

Prices have come down alot in the last 4 years to get a top end system then you would have to pay at least 600 to 800 more then you are paying now. So we are winning.🙂
 
Still more room for prices to come down...Professor Michio Kaku has stated many times that he expects computers to cost $0.01 in 20 years or so :Q

 
those prices are GREAT. that gateway is including 15" lcd is it not?
and all the homebuilts i've EVER seen come with terrible support, except the one i bought from my boss (hint, hint)

I checked, and it's only the regular 15" monitor. the 15" LCD is an extra $320
 
Those are actualy half way decent prices. You all seem to forget about how much OS's and programs cost alone, all this thread crap talk is nonsense

EXACTLY what I'm saying! You'll have REGISTERED LICENSED OSes on these machines! Try to fit THAT in a 600 home built PC budget! That's going to become priceless soon enough w/ all the crud that M$ has thrown into the new windoz XP and all that "I'm gonna find out if you're pirating my software" stuff that's built in there - or so they say 😀

anyway...I much agree...I think that we'll be seeing some reallynice prices soon 🙂

My friend and I debated on building a system for his brother. We don't need the headaches of dealing RMA seperate parts if something happens, etc, OS license issues (yes, we all know somebody with "trial" verison of windows), etc.. so dudes he got a Dell.

P4 1.6
256 DDR Ram
64 mb Geforce MX
sb live value
40 gig drive
free upgrade 12x burner
license XP OS
The Dell sticker
etc...

for 749 shipped.

All of us can say build it, etc... but if you had to include OS license, etc...you couldn't beat a Dell or Goatway for the non power user, etc...
 
Why buy a celeron computer...?its slow!

Go for that $595 shippied P4 1.6 Gateway machine deal. I know you are not getting a monitor but you are getting a P4, better RAM, better Video, CDRW...
 
All you peeps need to look at what your getting with those systems. the os is good, but they are skimping on everything else. all the sound and video is cheap. also, i would guess those hard drives are 5400 rpm. and not to mention the celeron is the biggest waist ever. go find your self a compaq or hp, or maybe even a sony with a athlon, and a decent set of specs. cheap is not alwase better. in my opinion dell has been verry skimpy lately.

This is actually an awesome deal for those that it applies too, some here @ AT may not build their own systems, if they don't then I give it a thumbs up! Good post for those that don't like to troubleshoot their own PC"S!😉

I don't buy from OEMs, period, end of story.

However, if the prices were to come down significantly, I probably wouldn't have a problem recommending such a system to someone looking to get something that's cheap and simply "works."
 
This is an issue where everyone can be right (except the people who just want to carp... that room is down the hall!).

I built my own system with Ultra-160 SCSI and etc. I wouldn't recommend this to my mother, or my best friend, or even most co-workers. Unless I didn't mind assuming responsibility for their systems like I do for mine. (Spent two hours yesterday tracking down a switch that went bad.) So, I repeat, $500 for a complete working system with WARRANTY and SUPPORT and legit software and even a decent CD-RW drive is NOT a bad deal.

You'd probably spend the $500 putting together a system that matched the Dell, including legit copies of the software. And even though many of us could do so... if you collected this box of parts and CDs and took it to them, 95% of the people in this country couldn't put it together, install the software and drivers, and make it work.

Finally, as I initially stated, this is but the opening salvo in a battle that promises to be bloody, potentially fatal to either Dell or Gateway, and to send ripples through the PC community including, possibly, bringing down those component prices.

 
There was a gateway deal for a 2GHz Northwood P4 a few days ago. Even pricing it out part by part, I couldnt come close to the 918 bucks shipped it costed. (Even using generics for the DVD and CDRW burner) I'm talking about close to 300 bucks difference!

I've always built my own machines, but I'm seriously considering buying this one. I've gotten gateways for my friend at an out of state college and she's been really happy with it. They seem to use decent parts (intel motherboards, western digital hard drives).

I have to say this is a great deal for those who do not build their own systems. I don't understand why people feel the need to crap on the thread because it doesn't apply to them. Who cares if the components are not top notch or the video isn't the top of the line? Most of the people who buy these are looking for a simple machine that they will use for word processing, email, and the internet. A Celeron is MORE than enough to do that. I for one do not tell my family members "Yeah, I can build you a computer..." and get stuck supporting the thing (after a long day at work dealing with servers/networks/PC's). I tell them to buy a Dell or Gateway, and get the support and licensed software. Sure I still support it a little, but they are more likely to call the phone support before bugging me...

Man, these prices are great for someone who wants a machine that just works. Like for my mother-in-law. She paid at least 3 times that much for a "local" built machine that was slow and had crap for software on it. Heck, I would consider buying one if I needed a complete new machine and didn't want a laptop.
