  1. Overview of the problem
Computer Posts but powers down with a "chime" sound seconds after

  2. Full description of the problem and symptoms
I have purchased a mobo for an old athlon xp 2600 cpu, I purchased this from ebay, I am sure it works as it had diognostic report attached.

I turn it on, it beeps, then seconds later it switches off with a strange chime sound I have never heard before.

  3. Did it work normally at one time, or has the problem always existed?

I used to run all other components in older pc's so other than motherboard everything has been run before.

  4. Is the problem consistent and repeatable, or entirely random, or semi-random?

when the problem happens, I have no response from the computer (power does not work)

I have to unplug the power cord from the back of the pc in order to get it to work again

  5. I already tried these steps:

    tried 3 sets of ram,
    2 gfx cards,
    2 hdd's
nothing but power to mobo and hdd, I have cleared cmos and replaced battery with a new one.

  6. My software:

    • Unable to boot in order to install os, but hdd has windows xp professional sp3 installed.

  7. My hardware

    • Home built system

      Athlon XP 2600 cpu
      MSI KM4M-L Socket A/462 Motherboard
1 gig Corsair 333mhz DDR ram
      ATI Radeon 9600pro
      WD 250gig IDE HDD
      Pioneer dvd-rw
      Generic 550W PSU

  8. Other information that might be relevant

The only weak link in this could be the mobo, I would like some advice before I bin it though,

long time reader, first time poster to this marvelous site, thanks in advance for all of your help

Sounds like a dead board. Just because it came with a diagnostics report doesn't mean it was the report from that board. Who's to say its a legitimate report anyway?

I am having the same issue. Just purchased a new power supply as that began making an awful racket the other day. Put new one in, and PC fires up then quits. Is there an easy way to test/tell if the mobo is shot?

One thing to check are the capacitors on the motherboard. If they are buldging at the top or bottm there is a problem. For the most part though its a matter of swapping out parts till the only thing left that hasn't been changed is the motherboard. If this guys case its a used board from ebay so there is a very good chace the board wasn't good to start with.

In your case the system powering on then turning off right away could be a bad PSU (which you have ruled out), a short, missed connection or a bad motherboard. But if the PSu works on another system and a new one doesn't work in the problem system then its likely the motherboard.

Thanks a lot for your reply's

You have a good point regarding the legitemacy of the report, I think this one is destined for the bin. Just thought I would ask someone more in the know before I did.

Thanks again

Well, i picked up a new mobo, and am having the same issue. I get the post screen and then a warning about it overheating. I am guessing my CPU is shot. Possibly from the PSU going and causing overheating?

I am grasping at straws here.
