Computer only sees half of my ram

Just today I realised that wondows only sees 256 of ram. This annoys me, because i have 2 sticks of 256 each in the motherboard. So I did some looking around, the bios also reports 256. Opening up the case and trying to reseat the ram resulted in the computer not booting for an hour or so, with the motherboard giving a "memory damaged or not installed properly" error (from the d-led's).
So I would like to know what troubleshooting steps to take now.
My guess is that either one of the sticks of ram is bad, or that somehow the second ram slot is bad.
I have an MSI K7T266 pro (not -a) motherboard, 2x256 of crucial ddr 2100 ram, athlon, ect...

If pushing it in harder isent working it's a bad stick. I have the same board as you and I can say that you really need to Jam the DDR in firmly. Try using the stick that you think is bad alone, and if its the ram, it wont work, simple as that.

try using just one stick of ram with the first stick and then again with the second and see if you still get the error with the ram. If you do, you know it's the ram, if not it might just be the other slot that you didn't use.

You should use the first slot on the board for ram and after that is populated add another to the second slot to work properly.
