Computer on lan suddenly wont connect to the internet!

Hello everyone. Ok here is what is going on... There are two pcs connected to the internet in my house. They share a cable modem with a D-link switch. The main issue is that some 3 days ago my sister's pc just stop being able to connect to the internet for anything (browser,icq,etc..).

So today i decide to check what is going on... I check the hardware profile on windows 98 SE. The network card appears to be ok, but there is a "PCI device" that has an exclamation mark on it. It appears to be an unknown device. The thing is I don't know what it is, I haven't installed any pci device recently, the only think i recently installed is an HP CDRW drive (internal) two weeks ago.

Another thing, is that the ping command seems to be working in DOS, which would mean that the nic is working properly. I also updated the drivers for the nic, but it changed nothing. Whenever i try to use IE, the "Status" dialog will just stay in "Web site found. Waiting for reply" or "connecting to 111.111.111.111". BTW, the other pc is working perfectly on the net.

Can anyone help me out? Anyone know of anything i could do to gewt an idea of what is going wrong? Any diagnostic programs out there that can help? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
 
to start out, try to remove the device with the exclamation mark.

note on reboot what type of device is re-installed.

we will start with that info.

 
When you say you can ping something are you meaning your nic,other computers nic or the internet? Double check your IE5 option. Can you switch the cables on the D-Link switch to double check the port is ok?

Try going to DOS and pinging the same site that in IE5 that says Web Site Found ect.. and see if you get a response.

What device is it? You can always try removing the device and Windows should detect it again. All this depending on what it is and if you have drivers for it. It might be trying to share a IRQ with something else?

 
Is it possible that your cable ISP has started limiting each house to one IP?

That's what I have with Road Runner and you can't run more than one pc thru a hub or switch.
 
ok, here are the answers to some of your questions...

I have removed the PCI device from the hardware profiles. When i reboot, it is detected, but it just says PCI device. Since i don't know what driver to use, and windows doesn't recommend one, i can't figure out what it is or does.

Now, here is what i am getting with ther PING command. I thought it was working but now I am beginning tot hink the whole problem is with my isp..

Apparently, some of my friends with the same cable company (ispchannel) have had their service go bad, and some can't even connect with one computer. I have a friend who has 3pcs connected, and none connect. He called and they said they had made a &quot;system upgrade&quot; that apparently had gone bad in our region 🙁.

However, i just made a direct connection from the cable modem to the pc without connection, and it still wouldn't work :l. I guess the next thing to do is install another nic. I have a new one in my room, so i guess i'll do that in a while...

Not sure if it will help, but sometimes i have had to remove TCP/IP totally from the protocols and reinstall it, you mite wanna try that, and also, disable that other device u have no idea what it is, that mite help also. Like i said, not sure if this will help, but its something that has had positive results for me before.
 
Here is an idea for you.

Sometimes windows just forgets what is what and you need to show it the way. Remove the offending device from device manager and click on the refresh button. It should bring up the window to install the driver for the pci device. Now browse around in the windows and windows/system directories and sub directories. Many drivers are stored here and you can find them again. When the ok button lights up (goes from grey to black) hit ok. It should tell you what the device is and what driver it wants to install. Install it if it seems ok.

I can't say this will work but it can't hurt either.
 
start/run/winipcfg release all-renew all

if that doesn't work try removing everyting from the network control panel and re-install it

also when she boots up is she asked for a MS networking password? if not then that could be a problem.

make sure she is configured form microsoft networks (not windows family logon-creates more problems than needed) or novell netware (whichever your running)

 
Boot into safe mode and remove the &quot;!&quot; device(s).
Un-install TCP and re-install, then add the IP if its static and make sure the subnet is correct. If you are assigned IP's dynamically then check with ISP about the amount of IP's you can get. If you only are allowed one then get a router that does NAT and set that up.
