I set up my computer the night before, everything was plugged in and it was working perfectly. It booted up into Windows XP, and voila it was working.

The next morning, when I go to turn it on, it doesn't. The monitor stays on a flashing orange. I had this problem previously with this computer and it turned out to be the processor (Which had obviously blew because the corner of the core had burnt). However with this processor (AMD XP2000) there are no visible cracks or defects to the chip yet this problem is still occuring. I have been having slight problems with the video card being loose, its an ASUS 8200 Geforce 3 and although I am certain it is as secure as it can be I am going to test the computer with another card tomorrow. The only other suggestion I have read (where the exact same problem occured) was that the IDE cable being used for the harddrive-motherboard was too long! I will test this out tomorrow because I am open to suggestions.

Any advice is extremely welcome

P.S. Forgot to mention that the motherboard being used is an ASUS A7V266 upgraded to fairly new BIOS if not the newest.

Might try resetting the bios. I dunno what board you have, but on the a7v266-e some of the boards have the same symptoms that you are having, and it's the bios hanging...

You have a power surge or something?

I sometimes have this problem, and it's usually a result of something being loose. a) make sure all connections are secure (all as in, RAM, vid card, monitor cable, hard drive, etc) or b) clear the CMOS. If those don't work (which i'm almost sure they will) then I am of no use here :( Good luck

still no luck as of yet, but i'm going to try switching the video cards around and some other equipment to see if it works any better.

I have managed through the process of elimination by switching the components with a different computer, to show that the CPU, RAM and video card are all fine. I am definitely sure that it is the motherboard at fault, however clearing the CMOS doesn't seem to make any difference at all. I am still getting this very frustrating orange/green light on my monitor. Is it just yet another dodgy Asus motherboard?
