The USB moused stopped working on my sons machine while he was using it last night.

I've tried swapping for a known working PS2 mouse, and still nothing. I've tried enabling and disabling USB mouse support in bios, no help. I also reset bios to "failsafe defaults" and still neither USB or PS2 mouse works. They both light up but the cursor doesn't move.

The keyboard is also USB and it seems to work (at least in bios)

What else should I try?

Reset CMOS? Repair install windows?

Seams odd that the KB works and the mouse doesn't. Does the KB work in Windows? If the KB and the mouse are having issues then a CMOS clear my fix the problem.

Try the keyboard in the USB port that the mouse failed in. You may simply have lost that port. USB can be flaky at times. I have had that happen. The easy fix is to add a powered USB port to the good system port and connect your stuff to it.

It will boot all the way into windows so I could F8 into safe mode, what would I do then?

If you can get inot device manager, uninstall the mouse. Hopefully, when you reboot, Windows will find it properly.

well if it works in safemode and not in windows something is conflicting with it.
If it doesn't work use your keyboard to navigate to device mnager as lenjack suggested.
remove it and force windows to redetect it.
