Cliff notes -

Computer cannot join domain

Can ping DC (across the wan)

CANNOT ping by name (added IP to lmhosts/hosts file - now can ping by name)

backstory BEFORE I got this ticket - the admin DELETED the computer off of AD - I attempted to change the name of the computer - still will not join domain - get event ID error 1058...

please help!

If you cannot ping the DC by name you have a DNS issue. No DNS pretty much screws up AD. Get you DNS working properly without the hosts/lmhosts file so your workstation can locate a DC via the SRV records on the DNS server.

Take it out of your LMHOST and HOST files and fix your DNS.

Why are you doing this anyway, this should be something handled by your IT department.

Sounds like he is the tech working the issue.
Ah ok, then he needs to ask the IT dept for help 😉

Also, ping might be blocked across the WAN, which would be a Bad Thing if you have domain controllers that need to replicate across WAN links.

It's also bad for clients, since they will never pull down group policy.

But if all the other clients appear to be working, I would start with your DNS settings.

try disconeccting any mapped drives and then removing the workstation from the domain. reboot and logon to the local station and join it to the domain. it should work like that. good luck
