Computer noise issue...

Normally, I would make a post of this type in the appropriate AT forum, but to be honest, I'm not sure what forum this thread belongs in, so here's my issue:

I'm running Win XP Pro, and when I actually see the BSOD, some components in my rig power down and the noise factor is not much higher than my DC or PS2. My question is, when the BSOD shows up, what powers down? If I could find this out, my rig would be something I would never turn off. Someone help! 🙁

My guess would be your hard drive. A lot of these 7200RPM IDE drives can be quite loud when spinning @ full speed...with maybe the exception of the Seagates. You could enable power saving on your hard drives so when the PC is idle they spin down...

Well I have two Maxtor IDE HD's, but if I set them to spin down, I suppose SETI won't run 🙁

edit: I just disconnected the slave drive, an old 20GB HD and the noise has dropped considerably 🙂 Now I only have the 40GB HD running and it's still an issue 🙁 . What's the most silent IDE out there, 40-60GB is more than enough for me; thanx in advance 🙂

It's hard to say what is the quietest. Take a look around some of the computer hardware websites. But you may buy two identical drives, and one is much noisier than the other. Often, the 5400 rpm drives are quieter. You may also cut down on some of the noise by buying a removable rack for the drive. That way, it's completely encased and will cut down some of the noise.

Go to a car audio store and buy some dyno-mat....cut it to fit around the outside of your case and leave a couple of holes for air intake and exhaust. Go do that and we'll stay here and talk about how gullable you are.

Maxtor, Samsung, Seagate make very quiet drives, I believe all of Maxtor's current line (40GB+) use Fluid Dynamic Bearings (FDB) which makes them run much quieter, the other companies have similar technologies making them a bit quiter.

Maxtors with FDB or Seagates...

If you are willing to go with less performance, less noice and better reliability, i would say, buy seagate... (less performance means you have to wait half a millisecond longer before PS starts)

I think the loudest thing in my computer is the fan on my Geforce 4.

Not counting my Liteon DVD drive, as thats only freakin loud when it's at full spin.

I'm all for quiet drives. I'm suffering with a whining Maxtor myself. Many told the Seagates are quietest, and Storage Review concurs. However, I think I'll take my chances with the WD800JB next time around.

BTW, is your HS/Fan shutting off during those blue screens? Not likely, I know, but how do you even hear the HDDs over it?
