Computer Monitor OR TV with S-Video?

I have been shopping for sometime now to upgrade from my older 17" Monitor to a 19" or 21" Flat Screen CRT
but I cannot afford a NEW 21", if I went that route, and find it hard to "take a chance" on one of those REFURBS.
Anyway, to get to my question, a friend of mine was here yesterday, and he said "Why don't you buy a Flat Screen TV, 19" or 20", with an S-Video input, and plug your Graphics card into that". Hadn't given that any
thought before he said it - but sure have since then. For about the same as, or less than, a 21" Refurb - I can get a NEW Flat Screen TV - where the 20" would be a true 20" Diagonal, rather than 19" Monitor being 18" Diagonal.
I had always thought you couldn't do this type of thing - BUT - can't see WHY not now????

Please - your 2 cents worth appreciated.

Well you can...but I don't think its what you're wanting. S-video outputs 480i @60Hz NTSC. OK for video, bad for desktop.

The reason is because text will be really blurry with the poor dpi quality of tv's.

Aye. It would kick ass for watching Divx/DVDs from your computer, or gaming (UT or any other game for the matter, looks like BUTTSECHS on a TV).

You could still get a good 19" for ~200-250 shipped.

Are you kidding me? The low resolution of TVs makes games look AWFUL. I've tried America's Army on a TV. It's truly horrible. And you can't read what anyone's saying. Awful, just awful.

You are smoking crack. It makes them look better, thats the thing. Add the better graphics capability of the PC plus the natural "blur" from the TV and it looks like the next gen console. Who gives a sh!t about reading text? If you want to chat while fragging, fine, but It looks good.

Monitor all the way. TVs of that size are almost sure to NOT have progressive scan ability - something that every CRT monitor has. You'll also be limited to 30fps on everything and graphics will appear blurry compared to a monitor, especially text.

Now if you can get a component connection or a VGA/DV-I, you'd have something. S-video has it's uses for low graphics quality games, but anything where you need text is really bad for the eyes. Trust me, I ran off my 32" TV for a while until I upgraded my monitor.

THANKS to ALL here who have helped me make a more informed decision - that being after reading
your advice, I will stay with buying a Computer Monitor - 19"-21".
