Computer monitor flickering, why?

For the last couple weeks my monitor has been flickering violently when I first turn it on. There is no issues if I just leave the monitor on 24/7 which I am tempted to do but if I leave it powered down for any extended period of time it flickers on and off for about 5 minutes before settling and looking normal, it isn't actually turning off but the screen goes almost completely dark. The monitor itself is 3.5 years old, a samsung 22" widescreen and I don't recall the model number. Any idea what the issue could be? Is the monitor broken/needing replacement or is it something else. I have tried plugging it into a different outlet/computer but receive the same issue.

I had my samsung (2443bwx) begin to flicker about a year ago, but not as bad as you describe. I wonder if you have an electronic part dying on you.

What is the warranty on the monitor? I had mine for just over a year and had it fixed at no charge by Samsung last year.

I figured it was probably kaput. At over 3.5 years old I doubt it still has any warranty left. I was kind of looking for an excuse to upgrade to something larger anyhow...
