My parents have an emacine with a 2.8 celeron with 256meg ddr and a shared video card. I put 1 gig of memory in and its running windows xp. Start up is completely a dog and takes forever. Also they have cable internet. When it first starts it takes forever to load. While it is faster for the amount of ram I added its pathetic. Any ideas? I disabled any processes I could think was of and pulled everything in I could in the start up menu.

I've seen Emachines that require ram with oddball timings with the idea that you need to buy it from them.

hmm bummer. So what do I do? Go to the emachines website(do they have a website) and check their timings compared to what I got? I got generic or whatever office depot had on sale last week.

not so sure it's a ram timing issue.

So you are saying that the computer is faster with the new ram, it's just not that much faster right? If that is the case I don't think buying ram from emachines is going to solve the issue.

I have a couple of ideas, one is that you have too many things starting up with the computer, could be spyware or adware, could be your hd on that machine is stuck in pio mode, could possibly be that the hd in that computer is in a failing state.

You could also run a diag on the HD with the manufacturer tool.

Do you have the info for the Mobo. I say the RAM is not compliant with the ic's. You need to check the old RAM stats and upgrade with he same type.

Cant do much now as Im no longer at my parents house. Dont know the timings of the ram but the speed is faster. I didnt see anything in the start up menu and the only other thing that starts with the computer is norton antivirus.
