Computer Lookup loop

Problem:
My computer will lock up, the mouse won't move, the keyboard won't respond, video freezes, and any sound coming out of the speakers at the instant it locks up loops (sometimes with a slight crackly) until it unfreezes. Upon unfreezing sometimes the music will cease to work and I have to reboot. This is completely random, sometimes I can be playing a game for hours and it won't do it, and other times i can be typing in notepad or the machine is just sitting there. I'm also noticing that lately the screen saver has been failing to come on more, and when i click on various programs i notice a slight flicker in the resolution. I also get "pops" with my monitor, the screen res will drop back and it shoot back out and make popping, the tube itself is making the sound. Some of these video problems are making me learn more towards the issue dealing with Video, now if its the card, the driver, or DirectX 9b i'm not sure.

I just upgrading the system to its current configs (see below), prior to these configs the only difference was a differnt motherboard and different ram. When I installed the new compents all ran peachy for almost a month, and now has just started back up. After doing some testing i realized the sound card i had in at the time Audigy Platium with an EX HD had bad rear channels, so i replaced it with a different audigy. I wonder if my card caused some kind of driver issue that is still present with the new card, or possibly caused some physical harm to the system itself -- how would I best test this theory? I think my next step is going to be to reinstall Windows 2000 and all the drivers to see if it goes back to working peachy clean as it did a week ago.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

some ideas:

check for irq conflicts in device manager...

check the temps with motherboard monitor...

run memtest86 to check the ram....

see if it locks up in safe mode...

pull the cards out and reseat them firmly...

pull out one card, run system, if it locks up again, pull another etc.

good luck
