Family member's computer is locking after awakening from standby. It is only after loading IE however.

After the computer wakes from standby, no matter how long after, if he launches IE, it locks (freezes) and he has to reboot. Now, this doesn't happen everytime, but pretty frequently.

He has a cable modem and it happens right after IE loads his home page (yahoo I think). Changing home page did nothing.

He has the most UTD windows updates and has not installed anything recently that might be the culprit.

Any thoughts. I'm not the best over the phone tech support person and don't have a lot of ideas on this one.

Do you have the very latest version of Windows installed with all the latest patches?

Does it happen when brousing for files (eg going to c:\program files\whatever)? This is infact explorer as well.

Maybe the problem isn't so much with explorer, but with the cable modem. Have you installed the latest drivers for it?

Do you have any alternate brousers on your machine? I do reccomend using firefox which is faster than IE, has more features (like tabbed brousing) and is lots more secure. It's available here:

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Even if you don't use it permanently, at least give it a try to determine whether it's IE or something else that's upsetting the computer.

There's a lot of issues with returning from standby and hibernation, because of the nauture of the process. You should make sure that everything is up to date, in particular your motherboard drivers.

I hope the above helps narrow down the problem, please get back to us with the results!

Edit: There's an issue with MS where a USB keyboard or mouse will fail upron returning from a standby state. Is the modem USB, by chance?
