every time after leaving my computer i return to find it frozen. if it was locking-up when i was doing some specific task then i could handle that, but this is odd. . . has anyone else ever expirienced anything like this?

my build is
GIGABYTE K8N SLi Pro Motherboard (. . . been givin me a little bit of trouble lately, see this forum entry if you like)
AMD A64 3000+
OCZ Value stuffs 1GB
Samsung 250GB
3DLabs Permedia2 8mb (embarassing i know. . . but i reverted to this after the collapse of my everyday video card)

giving the system something to think about seems to help i.e. running prime95, but who wants to be burnnin up your CPU all the time for no reason other than to prevent a lock up?
any idea about this?

After everything else is checked, reseating cards and making sure all connections are tight, consider a cold solder joint on the mainboard. As it cools down, it might just reach a point of contraction that something breaks power, then a shut down. But when it fully cools, contact is re-established and as it warms quickly, contact is maintained.

Just a guess.

Could also be a problem with something running or attempting to run in background. Disable all the non-essentials in MSCONFIG and Startup. Then see if it survives.

It can also be a problem setting in Power Management - something interfering with an attempt to Standby or Hibernate.

thank you all for your input. . . i checked with the newegg folks and they said i only had another three days left on my warrenty, lucky enough for me this happened just barely within the the warrenty period. . . so i didn't want to waste anymore time foolin with it and just went ahead and ar-em-ayed the thing. that is why i have not responded until now. . . an ASUS A8N SLi Deluxe on its way, hopefully that will work!

This happened with my newest built computer too. Turns out I just had a crappy motherboard. Came home from work one day and it was locked up.

It didn't like my ATI card too because it'd like to crash a lot during games.
